MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (17-21, 12-14 NSIC) fell to Concordia-St. Paul (28-18, 15-11 NSIC) 3-1 in game one and 7-2 in game two in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference double header at Mustang Field on Wednesday afternoon.
CSP's Carlie Hart became Concordia-St. Paul's all-time leader in hits in game one as her first hit, an inside the park homer, tied the record and a single to the pitcher would award her the accolade.
Game One
The Golden Bears cracked open the game in the top of the third as Hart hit a two-run inside the park home run to right field.
CSP then advanced its lead in the top of the fifth with a one-hit inning to bring the runner in on a ground out to the short stop.
The Mustangs went on the board in the fifth as
Emma Grote drove the ball to left center. Grote was brought in as Haylee Hentges sent the ball to right field for an RBI-triple.
SMSU attempted to make a run to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth with bases loaded after
Kali Tomlinson,
Alex Reak, and
Kaylea Van Regenmorter all singled to load the bases, although a ground ball to pitcher would strand all runners.
Tomlinson and
Bailey Johnson led the Mustangs with two hits apiece.
SMSU's
Athena Golling suffered the loss in the circle throwing all seven innings with four strikeouts.
Game Two
CSP took an early lead as Hart singled to start the first inning. Hart was then brought in by a ground ball to the first basemen.
The Mustangs responded with a two-run bottom of the first. With two outs, Johnson ripped the ball to left field for her 11
thdouble of the season. Johnson was then brought in by an RBI-single from Tomlinson up the middle.
Abbie Decker followed up Tomlinson with an RBI single past the second basemen to bring Tomlinson in for a 2-1 lead after one complete.
It wasn't until the top of the sixth that the Golden Bears brought a runner in from an RBI-single up the middle to tie the game.
The Golden Bears pulled away in the top of the seventh to string together four runs off four hits, one error and stranded one runner to secure the 7-2 victory in game two.
SMSU's
Shelby Crank threw a complete game with four strikeouts.
Johnson went 2-of-3 at the plate with one run scored to lead the Mustangs.
Tonight's double header at Mustang Field was the final home games for SMSU seniors

This weekend is the final weekend for the regular season. The top 10 teams advance to the NSIC Tournament in Rochester, Minnesota on May 2-4. SMSU currently ranks ninth.
Southwest Minnesota State concludes conference play on Saturday with a double header versus Minnesota Duluth in Duluth, Minn., at 1 and 3 p.m. and versus St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minn., at 12 and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
