TOPEKA, Kan. – The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team (1-0), opened the 2020 season with an 8-7 victory over Pittsburg State (5-14), scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth for the comeback victory at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka, Kan., on Friday morning.
The Mustangs trailed 7-4 after five complete before Bailey Johnson kick started the scoring with a double to center field to score Molly Bull, followed by a fielding error to score Madysson Schliinz and an RBI-double from true freshman, Jillian Noel ,would bring home both Johnson and Emma Grote.
PSU went on the board first in the bottom of the second, scoring on a wild pitch but the Mustang would respond in the top of three bringing in Schliinz on a ground out to short stop to tie it back up.
Before the inning was over, Kali Tomlinson ripped a homerun over the centerfield to score Johnson and put the Mustangs up 3-1.
PSU scored two runs off an RBI-single and a wild pitch to regain a lead at 4-3.
Lileya Kebos would tie it back up in the top of five,scoring Grote off a single to left field but Pittsburg would put up three more runs in the bottom for the 7-4 lead the Mustangs would rally from.
Kaylee Hentges led the team going 2-for-4 at the plate, while Schliinz, Grote, and Johnson would all record a team-high two runs apiece.
SMSU will face Central Missouri to close out the first day.
