MARSHALL Minn.- The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team(1-2, 1-2 NSIC) competed in its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home dual this season suffering a 29-12 defeat against Augustana University (2-2, 2-2 NSIC) in the PE Gym Thursday night.
 
SMSU's Ben Emrich earned a forfeit victory at a 125 pounds. Due to a late drop by Augustana, putting the Mustangs up 6-0. After that though, Augustana would go on to win the next seven bouts, building a 29-6 lead. Jackson Stauffacher suffered a loss at 133 by fall a minute into the second period, tying things up for the Vikings. Justin Sampson lost at 141 in a 7-2 decision, with Robert Shields at 149 and Carter Marx at 165 both suffering losses by tech falls. Sean Howk lost at 157 in a 7-3 decision and Hayden Voxland suffered a 6-2 decision at 174, along with Caden Steffen losing by a 12-4 major decision.
 
SMSU got back on the board with No.5 Jackson Ryan at 197, who would go into an overtime period tied at three. Ryan earned the victory takedown giving him the 5-3 decision and cutting Augustana's lead down to 29-9.
 
At the heavyweight bout Jacob Dykes would go against No.10 Steven Hajas. The match came down to the wire with the scored tied at two going into the third period. Dykes was able to get riding time to end the final period and earn a 3-2 decision over Hajas.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will be back in action next Thursday, Feb. 4, back at home in the PE gym going against Northern State slated to start at 7 p.m.
