No. 6 SMSU slays the Dragons in three sets

MOORHEAD, Minn.- The No. 6 ranked Southwest Minnesota State University (13-1 overall, 5-1 NSIC) offense proved to be too much for MSU Moorhead (1-13, 1-5) in a 25-17, 15-15, 25-16 sweep in favor of the Mustangs.

Meg Schmidt tallied 15 kills on a .542 hitting percentage to lead the Mustangs, scoring early and often to help boost SMSU. Angela Young added 12 of her own, while also collecting seven digs to help SMSU. Alisa Bengen set the table offensively with 34 assists and added to the defense with a season-high 12 digs. Payton Hjerleid led the team defensively with 15 digs and added four assists of her own.

Set one went to the Mustangs after a slow start that would see MSUM compile a 9-6 lead. A 6-0 run to go up 12-9 proved to be the fuel that would jumpstart SMSU, with Emma VanHeel lighting the offense with kills on each of the first three Mustang points, and Schmidt asserting her dominance early by putting up seven kills and a block en route to victory. The Mustangs tallied 18 kills to the Dragons' seven, and outhit MSUM .217 to .022.

Set two saw MSUM jump to a 7-2 lead early on before an 8-1 SMSU run gave the Mustangs a lead that would not be lost. A 10-7 lead would turn into a 16-12 lead, before four straight SMSU points would grow the lead to 20-12. A three-point run by the Dragons would be slayed by five-point run by the Mustangs to close out set two. SMSU outhit MSUM .290-.071 while limiting themselves to four attack errors.

Set three saw one lead change, as MSUM scored the first point before a 11-4 run for the Mustangs gave them a lead that would not be topped. The Dragons gave a scare, as a 6-3 run closed the SMSU lead to 19-16, but six-straight points by SMSU would send the Dragons away for good. SMSU would go on to deliver only three attack errors set three, while taking advantage of four in the final five points by MSUM.

The Mustangs would outhit the Dragons .281-.055 on the night, picking up 21 more kills and 14 more digs than MSUM.

VanHeel would finish the game with nine kills and four blocks, and Rachel Fink added 11 digs for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs will travel to Aberdeen, S.D., for a meeting against Northern State on Saturday at 6 p.m.
