MARSHALL Minn.- The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (1-2, 1-2 NSIC) will return to action Thursday night in its last home dual, facing Northern State (3-0, 3-0 NSIC), the "extra" matches beginning at 6 p.m. with the official NSIC matches starting at 7 p.m. in the PE Gym.
SERIES HISTORY: SMSU leads the all- time series at 29-10-3, in a series started in the 1979-80. SMSU is 4-1 in the last five matches with the Wolves last victory coming in the 2018-19 season.
HEAD COACH JESSE NELSON:
Jesse Nelson is in his 14th season as head coach at SMSU and has a career record of 87-104-1, including 35-64 in conference matches. Nelson, the fourth coach in the program history and the 2013-14 NSIC Coach of the Year, was hired on Aug. 22, 2007. During his tenure, Nelson has groomed 23 national qualifiers—including four two-time qualifiers and three three-time qualifiers—along with 13 All-NSIC honorees. Nelson has coached three NCAA All-Americans, including Justin Reinsma in both 2012 and 2013, Jacob Begin in 2015 and Cole Wilson in 2016.
SMSU NOTES: SMSU, which is received 10 votes in the Jan. 22 NWCA Top 25 poll, is 1-2 on the season earning its lone victory at MSU Moorhead on Jan. 7, SMSU would drop the next two duals to the University Wisconsin Parkside (28-6) and last week hosting Augustana (29-12). SMSU opened the dual against Augustana with a forfeit but would go onto to lose the next seven bouts, before No. 5
Jackson Ryan and
Jacob Dykes would earn victories both by decision, making both Ryan and Dykes 3-0 on the season.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: SMSU has one individual ranked in the first regular season NWCA national rankings released on Jan. 22 with 2020 NCAA National Qualifier,
Jackson Ryan (2-0), fifth at 197 pounds.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: In the latest Super Region V rankings, SMSU has three individuals ranked among the top six.
Hayden Voxland is ranked sixth at 174,
Caden Steffen is third at 184, while
Jackson Ryan is second at 197.
SENIOR NIGHT: SMSU will hold its annual senior night as the young squad honors
Jackson Ryan, who as a Mustang has gone; 76-50.
NORTHERN STATE NOTES: The Wolves enter Thursday's matchup with an undefeated record, taking down No. 22 Upper Iowa (18-15), No. 25 Wisconsin Parkside (20-12) and Minot State (25-13), keeping pace with No.1 St. Cloud State in the NSIC standings. NSU brings two top 10 NWCA wrestlers to Thursday's dual: No.8 Dayne Morton (133) and No. 10 Kolton Roth (141). NSU head coach Rocky Burkett is in his sixth season going 32-43 in conference duals.
FAN POLICY: Per Minnesota Department of Health guidelines, attendance will be limited to 150 people. The allocation of tickets, managed by the SMSU Athletics Department, will be based on NCAA guidelines and will be communicated with SMSU and visiting team personnel. Spectators are required to wear masks at all times and to follow social distancing guidelines by sitting with family members while on campus. Individuals are also required to fill out the COVID-19 "daily self-assessment" form online at
SMSU.edu. Individuals attending the SMSU wrestling match on Thursday versus Northern State are requested to park in Parking Lot A on the east end of campus and enter the PE Gym through the east doors. SMSU staff will be on-hand to assist spectators at Thursday's match.
