MARSHALL, Minn.- The Southwest Minnesota State University (1-1 overall) soccer team fell in its home opener to Missouri Western State University (3-0-1) 1-0 after a goal in the 99th minute.
The Griffons ended the game late in the first overtime period, when Eszter Toth buried a shot in the top right corner of the net from nearly 30 yards out, just over the fingertips of
Meghan Harkin. It was MWSU's second overtime game in as many games, tying with Wayne State on Friday before capturing their first overtime win of the season on Sunday.
Harkin recorded six saves for the Mustangs, making two leaping saves to lead the Mustangs.
Alex Lotts led the way for the Mustangs offense, taking three shots, while putting one on net.
SMSU was outshot 13-9 by the Griffons, and put three shots on net, compared to seven by MWSU.
SMSU opens its conference slate at Upper Iowa on Friday, Sept. 17, and at Winona State on Sunday, Sept. 19. The Mustangs return home for conference games against Minot State on Friday, Sept. 24, and UMary on Sunday, Sept. 26.
