Ferocious Mustangs rally falls short, drop five-set match to CSP

MARSHALL, Minn. – In a battle of two top-five teams, No. 2-ranked Concordia-St. Paul outlasted No. 5 Southwest Minnesota State in five sets to earn a big Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory by scores of 28-26, 25-12, 19-25, 16-25, 15-12.
 
CSP, which improves to 23-2 overall, 16-1 NSIC, closed the match with 15 blocks and hit .298, while SMSU, which drops to 20-5 overall, 12-5 NSIC, recorded just eight blocks and hit .162.
 
SMSU was led by Meg Schmidt, who racked up a match-high 21 kills and finished hitting .375. Saari Kuehl pitched in with 12 kills, while Brooklyn Kusler added nine kills.
 
Alisa Bengen dished out 52 assists for the attack and added 10 digs, while Abby Meister led the way with 13 digs. Emma VanHeel was tough at the net, blocking five attacks, including three solo blocks, while Katelyn Nichols added three blocks.
 
Kennedy Brady was the leader for the Golden Bears, recording 13 kills and seven blocks.
 
The Mustangs applied pressure early, jumping to a 7-3 lead behind four kills, an ace, and a pair of CSP errors, and stretching the lead to as many as seven at 14-7. The Golden Bears would linger around, but SMSU looked to take control after three straight points gave them a 23-19 lead. CSP responded, tying the match at 23-23 and fighting off set-points at 24-23 and 25-24, scoring four of the final five points to take the first set.
 
The Golden Bears marched to a 2-0 lead after a second set that wouldn't see them trail.
 
The Mustangs came out of the locker room for the third set with a vengeance, holding a lead the entire way and leading by as many as nine at 19-10 to win their first set of the night.
 
In set four, SMSU kept the ball rolling, scoring seven of the first eight points and 14 of the first 19 points to take a 14-5 lead. For the second consecutive set, the Mustangs led wire to wire, powered by a .333 hitting percentage to force a fifth set.
 
The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead to open set five, but would not lead the rest of the set, tying the match at 3-3 before a CSP run pushed them ahead 13-8. The fight of the Mustangs refused to go away, scoring the next four points to cut the lead to 13-12, but a service error, followed by a kill gave CSP the five set victory.
 
The Mustangs conclude their home schedule on Saturday afternoon, hosting Minnesota State at 4 p.m., inside the PE Gym.
