Mustangs drop a pair to open the Washburn Invitational

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (3-5) dropped a pair of games to open the Washburn Invitational on Saturday, dropping a 9-7 game against Central Missouri before losing to Pittsburg State 12-0 in five innings. 
 
UCM opened the scoring, driving in a run on a double play in the first inning. They would add to their lead in the second with a run scoring single up the middle, taking a 2-0 lead into the third. 
 
Jillian Noel would knot things up I the third, going dead center for her first home run of the season to drive in Lileya Kebos and even the game at 2-2. 
 
SMSU would keep it going offensively in the third, as Paige Shwaluk would take the lead with a two-run double, and Bailey Johnson would walk with the bases loaded to give SMSU a 5-2 lead. 
 
The Jennies would answer in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double followed by a two-run home run to reclaim the lead at 6-5 and added a pair of runs in the fourth to grow their lead to 8-5.
 
The Mustangs would charge back, scoring a pair of runs on a dropped fly ball to center field off the bat of Kebos in the fifth, but UCM would add an insurance run in the bottom of the inning to bring the game to its final score. 
 
Shelby Bloemandaal (2-2) would be dealt the loss on the mound, giving up six runs (all earned) on six hits in three innings while striking out two. 
 
SMSU collected nine hits in the first game, with Kebos and Shwaluk each picking up a pair of hits to lead the way. 
 
Pittsburg State would come out of the game on fire offensively, scoring four and the first inning and three in the second to jump to an early 7-0 lead. 
 
The Gorillas would add a run in the third, a run in the fourth, and three runs in the fifth to close the scoring. 
 
PSU would hit five home runs on the day, while the Mustangs would go hitless. 
 
Karlie Miller (1-3) threw all five innings for SMSU, giving up 12 runs (11 earned) on 13 hits and four walks, striking out four. 
 
The Mustangs are back in action on Sunday, playing Fort Hays State and Emporia State at 1:30 and 5:30, respectively.
