SAINT PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (8-13) closed out their trip to Florida dropping a pair of games at Eckerd College by scores of 7-1 and 6-0 on Friday afternoon on the campus of Eckerd College.
Eckerd would open the scoring in game one on a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning.
Patia Wolfe would cut the lead in half in the fourth, singling to left center field, bringing in
Lileya Kebos, but the Tritons would get the run back in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single of their own.
Eckerd would add four more runs in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double, a two-run home run, and a solo shot to bring the game to its final score.
Karlie Miller (2-7) would receive the loss, going seven innings while allowing seven runs (all earned) on 10 hits and three walks, and striking out a pair.
The Mustangs would collect nine hits in game one, with
Bailey Johnson and
Makenna Waldow each picking up a pair of hits.
Eckerd would open the scoring in game two as well, scoring three runs in the second inning to take another early inning lead.
The Mustangs would get their first scoring threat in the top of the fifth inning, getting a pair in scoring position with two outs, but Eckerd would get out of the jam.
Eckerd would add three more runs in the fifth on a three-run home run, and would close the game out with a three-run home run in the sixth to close the game out.
Shelby Bloemendaal (5-5) would be issued the loss in the circle for game two, going 5 1/3 innings, giving up nine runs (all earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out four.
SMSU would muster just three hits in the second game, with
Emily Tatur,
Bailey Johnson, and
Paige Shwaluk each collecting a hit.
The Mustangs finish their trip 3-6 and will have just over two weeks off, with their next games coming on Tuesday, Mar. 29 in their NSIC opener at home against Sioux Falls.
