WINTER HAVEN, Fla.- The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (6-8) dominated on offense, defense, and in the circle to take down West Virginia Wesleyan College (3-3) 10-0 in five innings to close out the first day of The Spring Games at the Diamond Plex Softball Complex in Winter Haven, Fla.
Shelby Bloemendaal would shine on the mound, throwing all five innings in just 40 pitches, giving up just two hits and forcing nine groundouts.
The Mustangs offense would produce 11 hits, as
Paige Shwaluk would lead the way going 3-3 with a pair of RBIs, and
Abby Russell going 2-3 with a pair of her own.
The Mustangs would start the game with a hit parade, as an Russell double,
Emily Tatur single,
Bailey Johnson single,
Jillian Noel double, and
Faith Lawson single would give the Mustangs an immediate 3-0 lead, and a
Patia Wolfe sac fly would push the lead to 4-0.
WVWC get two on in the bottom of the inning, but the Mustang defense would stop any signs of damage with a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning.
SMSU would strike again in the third, as a pair of walks would be followed by a throwing error on a sac bunt would allow Noel to score, and a
Makenna Waldow RBI groundout would bring in Lawson to give SMSU a 6-0 lead.
Paige Shwaluk would keep the runs coming with an RBI single up the middle to bring in Bloemendaal, and Russell would add insurance with a double to left to drive in Shwaluk to take an 8-0 lead.
The Mustang offense wouldn't slow down in the fifth, as three singles, a sac bunt and a sac fly would result in a pair of runs to grow their lead to double digits, and Bloemendaal would manufacture a pop out and a pair of groundouts to close out the shortened game.
SMSU is back in action tomorrow morning, taking on University of the Sciences at 8 a.m. CT before taking on Trevecca Nazarene at 11:15 a.m. CT.
