ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (16-25 overall, 8-10 NSIC) would drop game one 6-1 before falling 10-1 in five innings in game two against St. Cloud State (30-15, 18-6) on Sunday afternoon at Selke Field.
SCSU would open the scoring in the first inning of game one, reaching on an infield single with two outs followed by a two-run blast to take the early 2-0 lead.
The Huskies would threaten in the second, filling the bases with one out, but
Shelby Bloemendaal (8-7) would force a lineout and a fielder's choice to hold off the attack.
SMSU cut the lead in half in the fourth inning, as a
Molly Bull single,
Lileya Kebos single, and
Patia Wolfe double, all with two outs, would bring Bull home to make it a 2-1 ball game.
SCSU would add three runs to go up 5-1 in the fifth and would score one more in the sixth to bring the game to its final score.
Bloemendaal would receive the loss, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing four runs (all earned) on six hits and no walks.
The Mustangs would find a lot of barrels offensively but would have just five hits to show for it, as SCSU would seemingly be in the right places at the right times.
SCSU would score a run in the first inning and four in the second inning to jump to an early 5-0 lead in game two.
SMSU would try and chip away in the fourth, as
Jillian Noel would double off the fence in right centerfield do drive in
Emily Tatur to bring the score to 5-1.
The Huskies would get the run back in the fifth with a one-out RBI single, and then would score four more runs in the inning to complete the shortened game.
Karlie Miller (6-12) would be dealt the loss, giving up 10 runs (all earned) on 13 hits and three walks while striking out five in 4 1/3 innings.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Monday in St. Paul, taking on the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs on the campus of St. Thomas starting at noon.
