St. Paul, Minn. - The No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team had its 11-match winning streak to open the season come to an end on Friday night suffering a 3-0 setback to No. 5 Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday afternoon.
CSP (10-2, 3-1 NSIC), which hit .314 in the match—tied for the highest by an SMSU opponent this season—won by scores of 25-18, 25-10 and 25-22. CSP is just the second SMSU opponent to hit higher than .310 in a single match this season.
SMSU drops to 11-1 overall, 3-1 NSIC, after hitting a season-low .113.
Halle Jansen and
Karli Arkell each recorded eight kills to pace the Mustangs with Arkell hitting .333.
Emma VanHeel added seven kills, while
Saari Kuehl chipped in with six kills for the Mustangs.
Alisa Bengen dished out 28 assists for the Mustangs, while
McKenzie Tolk and
Rachel Fink each recorded 10 digs.
In the opening set, SMSU built a 10-6 advantage before a seven-point CSP flurry to take a 13-10 lead. The Golden Bears led the rest of the way, scoring the final five points to take set one.
The Golden Bears jumped out to a big 14-3 lead in set two, staying in control the entire way en route to a 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs wouldn't go away in set three, leading as late as 20-19, but CSP closed the set with six of the final eight points to come away with the victory.
Southwest Minnesota State will look to rebound on Friday, traveling to Minnesota-Crookston for a match-up beginning at 6 p.m.
