SMSU soccer welcomes Winona State and CSP for homecoming affairs

THIS WEEK
•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team (2-7-1, 2-4-1 NSIC) continues Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play this Friday and Sunday with a pair of home matches.
•On Friday, SMSU will host Winona State University (2-5-4, 1-4-3 NSIC) with game time slated for 5 p.m. before closing homecoming weekend on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. match-up against the Concordia-St. Paul (5-5-2, 3-3-2 NSIC).
•SMSU is coming off a 0-2-0 weekend, which included a 3-0 loss to then-No. 13 Minnesota State and a 2-1 loss to Sioux Falls.
 
SERIES HISTORY
•SMSU and WSU meet for the 38th time on Friday afternoon with WSU holding 32-1-4 advantage in a series that started in 1996.
•The teams tied 1-1 a season ago, and the lone SMSU win happening in Winona, Minn., on Nov. 1, 2019.
•SMSU has been shutout in 23 of the 37 all-time meetings.
 
•SMSU and CSP meet for the 26th time on Sunday with the Golden Bears leading 13-11-1.
•SMSU lost 2-1 last season in St. Paul and is 0-4-0 in the last four meetings, with one overtime loss.
•SMSU's last win came during the 2015 season in St. Paul.
 
HEAD COACH CLAY GLASGOW
Clay Glasgow is in his second season as head coach and has a record of 5-15-8 overall, including 5-12-5 in NSIC play. He was hired as the sixth head coach in program history on Feb. 25, 2022.
•Glasgow came to SMSU after spending eight seasons (2014-21) as head women's soccer coach at Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) recording a mark of 49-86-5.
•During his last two seasons at DWU, the Tigers amassed back-to-back winning seasons and qualified for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament both seasons.
 
MASON EARNS NSIC WEEKLY AWARD
•Sophomore forward Haley Mason was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 2.  
•Mason helped the Mustangs earn a conference point against the No. 23 Bemidji State Beavers for the first time since 2014, as she scored a goal in the 50th minute.
•Mason then scored a pair of goals in SMSU's 2-0 win over Minnesota Crookston. 
•Mason is the first SMSU player to earn NSIC Player of the Week honors since 2019.  
 
SMSU LAST WEEK
•SMSU went 0-2-0 on the road last weekend. SMSU and then No. 13 Minnesota State started play on Friday afternoon indoors after moving the match to the MSU Dome due to inclement weather.
•MSU opened the game's scoring in the fourth minute to build an early advantage. MSU would maintain a 12-6 shot advantage at the break with six on goal, while SMSU finished the opening half with four shots on goal.
 
•The Mavericks would put the game away early in the second half with a pair of quick goals, scoring in the 49th and 51st minutes.
•MSU closed the game with 30 shots with 14 on goals, while SMSU (2-6-1, 2-3-1 NSIC) ended the game with 11 shots with six on net. Haley MasonAudrey GallagherBrooke WetterstromAlyson GallagherAva Steffen and Kylie Birath each recorded a shot on goal for the Mustangs.
Kenna Conley started in goal for the Mustangs and allowed all three goals with six saves. Rachel Hicks came into the game with 31 minutes remaining and made five saves.
•In Sunday's loss to USF, the Cougars got out to an early lead after a goal in the third minute by Sara Nelson. USF followed that up with a goal by Julia Kreutner in the 21st minute to go up 2-0.
•The Mustangs were able to get on the board with a goal off of a penalty kick by Selena Prolic in the 32nd minute. The goal was Prolic's first goal of the season. 
Rachel Hicks made three saves in the losing effort for the Mustangs.
 
SMSU NOTES
Haley Mason leads the team with three goals and is tied for the team lead with six points.
Alyson Gallagher has two goals, two assists and six points.
Emily Maciel and Selena Prolic have SMSU's two other goals this season.
Kenna Conley is 2-4-0 in goal with two shutouts, while Rachel Hicks is 0-3-1
 
SCOUTING WINONA STATE
•The Warriors are 2-5-4 overall, 1-4-3 NSIC, and are currently 12th in the NSIC with 6 points.  
•WSU has allowed 13 goals on the season and has scored 14.
•Johanna Shubert leads the team with four goals and eight points.
•Alyson Jumper has started all 11 matches and has allowed 13 goals with three shutouts.
•WSU finished 9-6-4 last season and lost in the first round of the NSIC Tournament to Augustana by a score of 3-0.
 
SCOUTING CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL
•The Golden Bears are 5-5-2 overall, 3-3-2 NSIC, and are tied for fifth in the conference with 11 points.
•CSP has scored 20 goals this season and has allowed 12.
•Katie Anderson leads CSP with six goals and has scored 15 points.
 
SMSU PICKED 11TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL
•SMSU was selected 11th in the 15-team NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
•Mustang sophomore midfielder Laney Brill and junior forward Dare Kroeten were both named 'Players to Watch' in 2023.
 
MUSTANG HISTORY
•SMSU is in its 28th season of soccer in 2023 and 27th season of competition (2020 was canceled).
•SMSU has compiled an all-time record of 159-293-37, including 114-167-24 in NSIC games.
•SMSU has made 14 NSIC tournaments and played in the region championship of the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
•SMSU has recorded four winning seasons in program history with the last coming in 2019.
