SMSU volleyball closes its trip north with win over UMC

CROOKSTON, Minn.--The Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team added another win to its streak this afternoon with a 3-1 victory over the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles, winning by scores of 25-14, 24-26, 25-12, 25-15.

As a result, SMSU improves to 18-3 overall, 10-2 NSIC, while UMC drops to 3-17 overall, and 1-11 in the conference. SMSU hit nearly double what the Golden Eagles hit, posting a .327 percentage in comparison to just .148 recorded by UMC.

Four SMSU attackers recorded double digit kills in the win. Brooklyn Kusler led all Mustang attackers with 16 kills on .536 hitting (16-1-28), while adding a team-high three service aces, four digs, and one solo block in her effort. Leah Jones shined again in the win, picking up 13 kills on .324 hitting (13-2-24). Jones dished out 17 digs and recorded two block assists in addition. Karli Arkell found her rhythm this afternoon, hitting 11 kills with only one error for .476 hitting.

Halle Jansen had a season-best performance in today's match. Jansen posted a season-high 10 kills in the affair on .321 hitting, adding one assist and five digs to the team totals, which are also season-high marks.

Alisa Bengen had another impressive performance this afternoon. Bengen dished out 46 assists and tallied seven kills on offense. Additionally, Bengen recorded one service ace and 17 digs on the back line for the Mustangs.

McKenzie Tolk anchored the SMSU back line, snagging 19 digs and one service ace, while adding six assists on offense. Karli Arkell would post a team-high five total blocks in the contest, followed by Bengen with three, and Emma VanHeel and Leah Jones with two apiece.

Set one was pure dominance by SMSU. Backed by a killing spree from Saari Kuehl and Brooklyn Kusler, the Mustangs scored the first 11 points in the match unanswered. A Mustang attacking error would eventually give the Golden Eagles their first point to make it 12-1. SMSU continued to apply the pressure late into the set, tacking on point-after-point off kills by Halle Jansen and Leah Jones. UMC would go on a 6-2 run towards the end of the set which would be cut short by an Emma VanHell bullet, with SMSU taking the set 25-14.

UMC would open the second set with authority, scoring the first three points off a kill from Bailey Schaefer and two service aces from Dana Melby. The Mustangs would begin their rally with kills from Brooklyn Kusler. Alisa Bengen would snag a few kills between UMC points, catching the Golden Eagles front line off guard with her finesse, forcing a UMC timeout at 13-12. The Golden Eagles would push SMSU to its limit, forcing the score to 19-18 in favor of UMC. Halle Jansen would smash a crucial kill to tie the game at 20-20. UMC answered with kills of its own and two service aces. UMC forced an SMSU timeout at 24-24 and never looked back, scoring the final two points of the set with kills by Emma Malek and Maya Jones, winning the game 26-24.

Set three would have the Golden Eagles score the first two points, however SMSU would answer with authority. The Mustangs would go on a 7-3 run with kills shared amongst four attackers, pushing the score to 10-6. SMSU would follow up that run with another 7-4 run late into the set, eventually forcing a UMC timeout at 18-12. The Mustangs would score the final seven points in the set, with Alisa Bengen smashing a kill and closing it out by a score of 25-12.

Set four was all SMSU. The Mustangs jumped out to a 9-1 lead to start, and never looked back. UMC would tack on a few points to its total, but unfortunately would not have enough gas to come back. Halle Jansen would again prove crucial, smashing numerous kills for SMSU in the final set with support from Brooklyn Kusler and Karli Arkell, winning the set 25-15.
