Mustang soccer opens three-game homestand this weekend

THIS WEEK
•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team (4-9-1, 4-6-1 NSIC) starts a crucial three-game homestand to close the regular season this Friday facing Northern State University (6-3-5, 5-1-5 NSIC) at Mattke Field at The Schwan Regional Event Center with game time slated for 5 p.m.
•On Sunday, SMSU will have 'Senior Day' with the Mustangs battling MSU Moorhead (3-8-4, 2-5-4 NSIC) starting at 1 p.m.
•SMSU, which split a pair of road games last weekend, begin the weekend in 10th place with 13 points. The top eight teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the NSIC Tournament starting on Nov. 6. Concordia-St. Paul, Wayne State and UMary are tied for seventh place with 17 points each.
•Following this weekend, SMSU will close the regular season hosting Augustana on Nov. 2.
•Northern State is one of 10 teams regionally ranked (listed alphabetical) in the first NCAA Central Region rankings released on Wednesday.
 
SENIOR DAY ON SUNDAY
•SMSU has five seniors on the 2023 roster with Kylie Birath, Madi Foutz, Rachel Hicks, Emily Maciel and Ciarra Valdez.

SERIES HISTORY
•SMSU and NSU meet for the 31st time on Friday with SMSU holding at 14-13-3 advantage in a series that started in 1997.
•The series is tied 7-7 in games played in Marshall.
•The two teams tied 2-2 last season in Aberdeen, while NSU earned a 2-0 victory during the 2021 season in Marshall.
•SMSU's last victory in the series came during the 2019 season in Aberdeen. SMSU's last victory in Marshall occurred during the 2013 season.

•SMSU and MSUM meet for the 32nd time on Sunday with the series tied 14-14-3 in a match-up that began during the 1996 season.
•SMSU is 8-5-2 all-time in games played in Marshall, including earning a 2-0 victory during the 2021 season.  
•MSUM earned a 3-1 victory last season in Moorhead.

HEAD COACH CLAY GLASGOW
Clay Glasgow is in his second season as head coach and has a record of 7-17-8 overall, including 7-14-5 in NSIC play. He was hired as the sixth head coach in program history on Feb. 25, 2022.
•Glasgow came to SMSU after spending eight seasons (2014-21) as head women's soccer coach at Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) recording a mark of 49-86-5.
•During his last two seasons at DWU, the Tigers amassed back-to-back winning seasons and qualified for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament both seasons.
 
SMSU NOTES
Haley Mason and Selena Prolic both lead the team with three goals and one assist for seven points.  
Alyson Gallagher has two goals, two assists and six points.
Kenna Conley is 4-5-0 in goal with four shutouts, while Rachel Hicks is 0-4-1.
Sydney Johnson and Emily Maciel each have one goal.
 
SMSU LAST WEEK
•SMSU finished 1-1 in a pair of road games last weekend, suffering a 2-1 loss at Minnesota Duluth on Friday, before earning a 1-0 victory over NSIC-leading and regionally-ranked St. Cloud State, 1-0.
Selena Prolic scored the lone goal for SMSU at UMD with a penalty kick in the 83rd minute.
•In Sunday's win, Sydney Johnson scored her first career goal for SMSU with the game-winner coming in the 80th minute.
Kenna Conley made eight saves to register her fourth shutout of the season.
 
MASON EARNS NSIC WEEKLY AWARD
•Sophomore forward Haley Mason was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 2.  
•Mason helped the Mustangs earn a conference point against the No. 23 Bemidji State Beavers for the first time since 2014, as she scored a goal in the 50th minute.
•Mason then scored a pair of goals in SMSU's 2-0 win over Minnesota Crookston. 
•Mason is the first SMSU player to earn NSIC Player of the Week honors since 2019.  
 
SCOUTING NORTHERN STATE
•The Wolves currently are in fourth place in the NSIC with an overall record of 6-3-5, including 5-1-5 in NSIC play.
•NSU is 0-1-3 in its last four games with its last victory at Minnesota Crookston on Oct. 6.
•Megan Fastenau leads the team with five goals and 12 points.
•Alexus Townsend has played 14 games in goal and has allowed 13 goals with five shutouts, while recording a mark of 6-3-5.
 
SCOUTING MSU MOORHEAD
•The Dragons are 3-8-4 overall, 2-5-4 NSIC, and are currently in 12th place in the NSIC standings. MSUM plays at Augustana on Friday before facing SMSU.
•MSU is coming off a 2-1 home victory over Minnesota State on Sunday.
•Tabea Czech leads MSUM with seven points with a pair of goals and three assists.
•Madeline Etter has registered a pair of goals and is tied for second in scoring with four points.
•Simone Lewald has played in 13 games in goal and is 3-6-4 overall with four shutouts.  
 
SMSU PICKED 11TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL
•SMSU was selected 11th in the 15-team NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
•Mustang sophomore midfielder Laney Brill and junior forward Dare Kroeten were both named 'Players to Watch' in 2023.
 
MUSTANG HISTORY
•SMSU is in its 28th season of soccer in 2023 and 27th season of competition (2020 was canceled).
•SMSU has compiled an all-time record of 161-295-37, including 116-169-24 in NSIC games.
•SMSU has made 14 NSIC tournaments and played in the region championship of the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
•SMSU has recorded four winning seasons in program history with the last coming in 2019.
