SMSU soccer with two road games this weekend

THIS WEEK
•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team (2-5-1, 2-2-1 NSIC) continues Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play this Friday and Sunday with a pair of road games.
•On Friday, SMSU will take on No. 13 Minnesota State University (6-1-3, 4-0-2 NSIC) with game time slated for 3 p.m. before closing the weekend on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. match-up at the University of Sioux Falls (1-5-2, 1-2-2 NSIC).
•SMSU is coming off a 1-0-1 home weekend which included a 1-1 tie with No. 23 Bemidij State and a 2-0 win over Minnesota Crookston.
 
SERIES HISTORY
•SMSU and MSU meet for the 24th time on Friday afternoon with MSU holding 21-1-1 advantage in a series that started in 1996.
•The teams tied 0-0 during the 2013 regular season before SMSU earned its lone win in the series later that season 2-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
•SMSU has been shutout in 17 of the 23 all-time meetings.
•MSU defeated SMSU 5-0 last season in Marshall.
 
•SMSU and USF meet for the 18th time on Sunday with SMSU leading 10-6-1.
•SMSU won 3-2 last season in Marshall and is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings.
•USF's last win came during the 2017 season in Marshall.
 
HEAD COACH CLAY GLASGOW
Clay Glasgow is in his second season as head coach and has a record of 5-13-8 overall, including 5-10-5 in NSIC play. He was hired as the sixth head coach in program history on Feb. 25, 2022.
•Glasgow came to SMSU after spending eight seasons (2014-21) as head women's soccer coach at Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) recording a mark of 49-86-5.
•During his last two seasons at DWU, the Tigers amassed back-to-back winning seasons and qualified for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament both seasons.
 
MASON EARNS NSIC WEEKLY AWARD
•Sophomore forward Haley Mason was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.  
•Mason helped the Mustangs earn a conference point against the No. 23 Bemidji State Beavers for the first time since 2014, as she scored a goal in the 50th minute.
•Mason then scored a pair of goals in SMSU's 2-0 win over Minnesota Crookston. 
•Mason is the first SMSU player to earn NSIC Player of the Week honors since 2019.  
 
SMSU LAST WEEK
•SMSU went 1-0-1 in two home games last weekend. SMSU and Bemidji State started play on Friday night, but play was suspended early in the second half due to thunderstorms. The teams resumed play on Saturday morning with both teams scoring second half goals to end in a 1-1 tie.
Haley Mason scored in the 50th minute off assists from Malorie Maderak and Alyson Gallagher. BSU would rally back and score the tying goal in the 86th minute.
Rachel Hicks made two saves in goal for the Mustangs.
•In Sunday's win over UMC, Mason scored in both halves, with the first coming in the 21st minute off of assists from Brianna Guerrero and Audrey Gallagher. Mason's second goal came in the 46th minute with assist by Brooke Wetterstrom
Kenna Conley made two saves in net for SMSU as she registered her second shutout of the season. 
 
SMSU NOTES
Haley Mason leads the team with three goals and is tied for the team lead with six points.
Alyson Gallagher has two goals, two assists and six points.
Emily Maciel has SMSU's other goal this season.
Kenna Conley is 2-3 in goal with two shutouts, while Rachel Hicks is 0-2-1
 
SCOUTING MINNESOTA STATE
•The Mavericks are 6-1-3 overall, 4-0-2 NSIC, and are currently tied for first place in the NSIC with 14 points.  
•MSU has allowed just two goals on the season and has scored 15.
•Allie Williams leads the team with three goals and eight points.
•Mackenzie Rath has played in 10 games has allowed two goals with seven shutouts.
•MSU finished 14-2-6 last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round.
 
SCOUTING SIOUX FALLS
•The Cougars are 1-5-2 overall, 1-2-2 NSIC, and will play at Winona State on Friday.
•Delani Daubman was named NSIC Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday. She is 1-0-2 on the season with 27 saves.
•Sarah Miller has two goals to lead the Cougars.
 
SMSU PICKED 11TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL
•SMSU was selected 11th in the 15-team NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
•Mustang sophomore midfielder Laney Brill and junior forward Dare Kroeten were both named 'Players to Watch' in 2023.
 
MUSTANG HISTORY
•SMSU is in its 28th season of soccer in 2023 and 27th season of competition (2020 was canceled).
•SMSU has compiled an all-time record of 159-291-37, including 114-165-24 in NSIC games.
•SMSU has made 14 NSIC tournaments and played in the region championship of the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
•SMSU has recorded four winning seasons in program history with the last coming in 2019.
