SMSU closes season hosting Augustana on Thursday

THIS WEEK
•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team (5-10-1, 5-7-1 NSIC) closes the 2023 season on Thursday night hosting Augustana University (9-5-3, 7-4-2 NSIC) at Mattke Field at The Schwan Regional Event Center with game time slated for 5 p.m.
•SMSU, with 16 points, enters the game in 10th place in the NSIC standings and will come up just short in qualifying for the eight-team NSIC Tournament that begins on Nov. 6. Minnesota Duluth is currently in eighth place with 20 points with Wayne State in ninth place at 18 points.
•Augustana is currently tied for fourth place in the league standings and was one of 10 teams ranked in the first NCAA region rankings last Wednesday.
 
FINAL GAME FOR FIVE SENIORS
•SMSU has five seniors on the 2023 roster that will be playing their final game, including Kylie Birath, Madi Foutz, Rachel Hicks, Emily Maciel and Ciarra Valdez.

SERIES HISTORY
•SMSU and Augustana meet for the 26th time on Thursday with AU holding at 20-4-1 advantage in a series that started in 2000.
•SMSU was 3-0-1 in the first four games of the series, but AU has won 20 of the last 21 games since the 2004 season. SMSU's lone victory during the stretch came in Marshall, 2-1, on Nov. 2, 2014.
•SMSU is 2-9 all-time in games played in Marshall.
•AU won 4-1 last season in Sioux Falls, S.D.

HEAD COACH CLAY GLASGOW
Clay Glasgow is in his second season as head coach and has a record of 8-18-8 overall, including 8-15-5 in NSIC play. He was hired as the sixth head coach in program history on Feb. 25, 2022.
•Glasgow came to SMSU after spending eight seasons (2014-21) as head women's soccer coach at Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) recording a mark of 49-86-5.
•During his last two seasons at DWU, the Tigers amassed back-to-back winning seasons and qualified for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament both seasons.
 
SMSU NOTES
Haley Mason and Selena Prolic both lead the team with three goals and one assist for seven points. 
Alyson Gallagher has two goals, two assists and six points, while Brooke Wetterstrom also has six points with one goal and team-high four assists.
Kenna Conley is 4-6-0 in goal with four shutouts, while Rachel Hicks is 1-4-1.
Sydney Johnson, Emily Maciel and Dare Kroeten each have one goal.
 
SMSU LAST WEEK
•SMSU finished 1-1 in a pair of home games last weekend, suffering a 2-0 loss to regionally-ranked Northern State on Friday night, before earning a 2-0 victory over MSU Moorhead on Sunday afternoon.
•In the loss to NSU, Kenna Conly registered seven saves in the losing effort.
•SMSU finished with eight shots with seven on goal.
•In Sunday's win, Brooke Wetterstrom and Dare Kroeten each scored a goal to pace the Mustangs.
Rachel Hicks made three saves to register her first victory of the season and her fourth career shutout.
 
MASON EARNS NSIC WEEKLY AWARD
•Sophomore forward Haley Mason was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 2.  
•Mason helped the Mustangs earn a point against No. 23 Bemidji State for the first time since 2014, as she scored a goal in the 50th minute.
•Mason then scored a pair of goals in SMSU's 2-0 win over Minnesota Crookston. 
•Mason is the first SMSU player to earn NSIC Player of the Week honors since 2019.  
 
SCOUTING AUGUSTANA
•The Vikings have an overall record of 9-5-3, including 7-4-2 in NSIC play.
•AU split a pair of home games last weekend, beating MSU Moorhead before losing 1-0 to Northern State.
•Hope Korte leads the team with six goals and 16 points.
•Jillian Barkus has played every minute in goal and has allowed 14 goals with eight shutouts, while recording 0.82 GAA.
 
SMSU PICKED 11TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL
•SMSU was selected 11th in the 15-team NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
 
MUSTANG HISTORY
•SMSU is in its 28th season of soccer in 2023 and 27th season of competition (2020 was canceled).
•SMSU has compiled an all-time record of 162-296-37, including 117-170-24 in NSIC games.
•SMSU has made 14 NSIC tournaments and played in the region championship of the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
•SMSU has recorded four winning seasons in program history with the last coming in 2019.
