MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team ended its season with a bang, defeating regionally-ranked Augustana 3-1. It is the first Mustang victory over the Vikings in nine years (Nov. 2, 2014), and first SMSU home victory against Augustana since that same date.
The Mustangs finish the 2023 season ninth in the NSIC with a 6-7-1 record in the conference (19 points), and a 6-10-1 record overall.
Augustana finishes fifth in the conference with a 7-5-2 record (23 points), and a 9-6-3 record overall.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead off a header from
Dare Kroeten in the 11th minute. Kroeten was dished a helpful cross from
Brianna Guerrero and sent the ball straight over the head of the AU keeper. The goal is Kroeten's second of the season, with the assist from Guerrero being her first of the year.
Tessa Borwick struck next for SMSU in the 23rd minute.
Brooke Wetterstrom placed a cross perfectly in the center of the box for the one-timer goal. The score is Borwick's first of her collegiate career.
Brooke Wetterstom netted the final goal for the Mustangs in the 35th minute of play.
Alyson Gallagher pushed a beautiful through-ball to set up Wetterstrom from 30 yards out. The goal is Wetterstroms second of the year, while also securing her fifth assist on the Borwick goal.
Rachel Hicks made nine saves for the Mustangs tonight en route to her third collegiate victory. Hicks faced 10 shots total in the game.
Augustana had 17 shots on the night, with 10 being on net. Augustana defender Connor Rylance scored the lone goal for the Vikings in the 62nd minute.
