Mustangs finish THE Spring Games .500 after close battles to Lewis and GVSU

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team closed its Florida trip with a pair of tough losses, 3-2 to the Lewis University Flyers and 4-0 to the No. 7-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers on Saturday morning at Legends Way.

Abby Boxrud fueled the offense in the second inning, drawing a one out, 10-pitch walk to give SMSU a base runner. Paige Ahrendt moved her to second with a sac bunt, and Katie Palmer drove her in with a single that deflected off the pitcher, slowing the ball down enough to allow Boxrud to score from second.

The Mustangs scored again in the fourth when Makenna Waldow singled over the first baseman with two away to bring home Molly Bull and give SMSU a 2-0 advantage.

Shelby Bloemendaal was on cruise control through four innings, allowing three hits and throwing just 50 pitches to quiet the Lewis bats.

The tempo slowed down in the fifth and the Flyers attacked, stringing together a triple, double, walk, and single to score three runs and give Lewis the lead at 3-2.

After a pair of innings in which the Mustangs left a single runner on, they looked to be in business in the seventh. Riley Kramolisch and Shelby Bloemendaal each picked up one-out singles, but a strikeout and groundout ended the threat and the game.

Bloemendaal (1-4) was solid in the circle, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out one in 4 1/3 innings of work. Morgyn Otte threw the final 2 2/3 innings, striking out a pair and walking one without allowing a hit.

Kramolisch went 3 for 4 to lead the offense, while Bloemendaal and Palmer each collected a pair of hits.

Allison Christians (2-2) battled against the No. 7-ranked Lakers, allowing a pair of runs in the first, one in the third, and one in the fifth. It was the second lowest run total for GVSU in their last seven games.

Bloemendaal and Waldow each tallied singles for an offense that struck out just once.

The Mustangs have over two weeks off, next in action Mar. 28 in Sioux Falls, S.D., to face the Cougars, opening up NSIC play starting at 2 p.m.
