WINONA, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (6-17 overall, 1-3 NSIC) dropped a pair of games, 8-1 and 10-3, to Winona State (22-9, 5-1 NSIC) at Alumni Field on the campus of Winona State University. The Mustangs were the home team in both games following site reversal.
Shelby Bloemendaal,
Riley Kramolisch, and
Katie Palmer each had two hits on the day for the Mustangs, while
Abby Russell,
Paige Ahrendt, and
Molly Bull each collected a hit.
The Warriors scored three first inning runs and a run in the third to take a 4-0 lead in game one.
Kramolisch drove in Palmer on a sac fly to bring SMSU within three, but a run and the sixth and three in the seventh by the Warriors closed the scoring and secured a win in game one.
Morgyn Otte (1-6) would get the loss in game one, going seven innings, giving up eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits and four walks while striking out three.
WSU opened the scoring in game two in the fourth inning, smashing a two-out RBI double for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, SMSU broke through, as Ahrendt sent a double to the right-centerfield fence, bringing in
Jillian Noel and Bull and giving the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
The Warriors responded, scoring the next nine runs before an RBI single from Bloemendaal in the seventh closed the scoring.
Karlie Miller (2-5) went go seven innings, giving up 10 runs (seven earned) on nine hits and five walks while striking out two in game two.
The Mustangs will be in Mankato, Minn. for a doubleheader with Minnesota State starting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Apr. 5.
