MARSHALL, Minn. – The No. 12 ranked Minnesota State women's soccer team used four second half goals to pull away and defeat Southwest Minnesota State, 5-1, in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Friday afternoon.
MSU improves to 7-1-3 overall, including 6-0-1 NSIC, while SMSU drops to 1-8-1 overall, 1-4-1 NSIC.
MSU scored the lone goal in the opening 45 minutes with Mila Rustin scoring unassisted.
SMSU would quickly score in the second half to tie the game as
Haley Mason scored her team-leading third of the season in the 46
th minute.
MSU however answered seven minutes later with Avery Korsching scoring off a pass from Anna Van Wyngarden in the 53
rd minute. The Mavericks put the game away with goals in the 75
th and 80
th minute before closing the game with a goal in the 81
st minute.
Rachel Hicks played strong in goal for the Mustangs making several big saves and closed the game with 10 saves.
MSU finished the afternoon with 24 shots with 16 on goal. SMSU had five shots with all five on goal. Mason led the Mustangs with three shots on goal, while
Selena Prolic and
Sophia Wilson each had one shot on goal.
The Mavericks now hold a 23-1-1 all-time series advantage over the Mustangs.
SMSU continues homecoming weekend action on Sunday hosting Sioux Falls with game time set for 1 p.m.
