Mustangs drop final match of the season to Vikings

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team closes the 2024 season with a 6-0 loss to Augustana in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Thursday evening. 

Augustana improves to 10-4-4 overall, including 9-2-3 NSIC while the Mustangs drop to 2-14-2 overall and 2-10-2 NSIC. 

The Mustangs recorded five shots with none on net.   

The Vikings posted 19 shots with 14 on net. Leading the Augie offense was Morgan Mancuso recording two goals. Sierra Barkus, Macie Haggerty, Erika Leeman, and Zoey Mandery all scored one goal. 

SMSU goalkeeper, Rachel Hicks faced 14 shots on goal while recording eight saves and allowing six goals. 

The Vikings offense started off fast and found the back of the net in the 7th minute of play by Sierra Barkus. 

The Vikings were able to extend their lead by another goal off a cross by Madelyn White to find Macie Haggerty to score the second goal.  

With three minutes remaining in the first half, Augustana would net its third goal of the half by Zoey Mandery.  

The Mustangs had two shots but none on net while AU had 12 shots with nine on net. The Mustangs would go into halftime with a 3-0 deficit.  

The Vikings would open the second half with a goal by Erika Leeman in the 56th minute. 

The Vikings would close out the game with two goals in the 82nd and 90th minute to make the score 6-0. 

The Mustangs would close the 2024 season 2-14-2 overall and 2-10-2 in NSIC. Haley Mason ended the season leading the Mustangs in scoring with four goals. Dare Kroeten ended the season with a team-best two assists. 

Thursday afternoon marked the final match in the Mustang career of 11 seniors: Hicks, Mason, Laney Brill, Kroeten, Selena Prolic, Brianna Guerrero, Hannah Walburg, Kylie Peters, Emma Dahnert, Emily Maciel, and Sydney Johnson.
