MINOT, N.D. -- The Southwest Minnesota State softball team struggled to get the bats going on Friday, dropping both games of a doubleheader, 4-0 and 10-0 in five innings, to Minot State in NSIC softball at the South Hill Sports Complex.
SMSU drops to 11-18 on the year and 2-4 in NSIC play. MISU jumps to 11-7 overall and 6-0 in the NSIC.
Minot State scored its first run in the second inning on a double down the left field line. The Mustangs were retired in order in the following two innings and MISU took advantage of the quiet SMSU bats in the bottom of the fourth.
The Beavers kicked off the inning with a triple to left-center field before putting another runner in scoring position off a stolen base. A single up the middle plated the second run for MISU, and the Beavers never looked back.
MISU tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth while holding SMSU to just one hit in the seventh to close out the game.
Karlie Miller (6-9) was tabbed with the loss in game one, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out six. Reegan Floyd (3-2) earned the win for the Beavers, throwing a complete game shutout and allowing just four hits with three strikeouts.
Brynn Webber went 2 for 3 at the plate in game one.
Morgyn Otte (5-7) took the loss in game two, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits and two walks in 3 innings.
Jordan Bussey threw one inning in relief, allowing a hit and walk.
MISU plated its first three runs right away in the first inning, added three more in the second, and drove in its final four runs in the third. The Beavers collected 12 hits in game two with Abby Lohse leading the way going 3 for 3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs.
SMSU returns to the field tomorrow, playing a pair of games against UMary (7-19, 0-4 NSIC) in Jamestown, N.D., with first pitch of game one at 10 a.m.
