BISMARCK, N.D. – The No. 5 Mustangs continue their winning streak with a sweep over UMary in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball at the McDowell Activity Center on Saturday night.
SMSU, now 10-0 overall and 2-0 in NSIC play, earns its 26th consecutive win over the Marauders to extend its unbeaten streak in the all-time series.
UMary drops to 2-8 on the year and 0-2 in the NSIC.
Saari Kuehl led the Mustangs offense with a match-high 14 kills on .333 hitting, while adding two block assists, and one dig.
Leah Jones tallied nine kills on .429 hitting, while adding 10 digs and one block assist.
Karli Arkell and
Ashley Peltier recorded seven kills apiece, and both tallying two block assists.
Sydney Thein supported the attack by recording 37 assists and seven digs.
McKenzie Tolk anchored the back line with 24 digs, followed by
Kennedy Drake securing 11 digs.
Charli Blackman led UMary with 10 kills. Maddy Freed supported the Marauders offense with 27 assists and four digs. The UMary defense was led by Kaia Sueker, who logged 15 digs.
The Mustangs came out swinging to jump out to a 10-0 advantage in the first set. The Mustangs would continue their momentum to win set one by a score of 25-9. In set two, SMSU would use a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 21-13.
UMary tried its hardest to battle back in the final set, limiting SMSU to .261 hitting with seven attaching errors. The Marauders defense still failed to stop the Mustangs' attacking unit as
Saari Kuehl swung for seven kills and
Leah Jones tallied six kills in set three to lead SMSU to the sweep.
SMSU posted 46 kills on .310 hitting with 10 total blocks, while UMary was limited to 33 kills on .093 hitting.
The Mustangs return to the court Tuesday, Sept. 24 with a non-conference home match versus Augustana (6-4, 2-0 NSIC), with first serve set for 6 p.m.
