SMSU soccer looks to bounce back with two NSIC matches this weekend

THIS WEEK
  • The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team (2-9, 1-7 NSIC) continue NSIC action this week with a pair of matches
  • The Mustangs start the weekend in Wayne, Neb., facing Wayne State (4-3-4, 3-3-2 NSIC) on Friday, Oct. 17, at 3 p.m.
  • Then on Sunday, the Mustangs travel back to Marshall to face Augustana (7-2-2, 5-2-1 NSIC) at 1 p.m.

  • Both games are available to watch on the NSIC Network.
LAST WEEK
  • The Mustangs went on the road, facing Jamestown and Northern State
  • SMSU lost against Jamestown 4-1 last Friday, with Laynee Godfrey scoring her first collegiate goal for the Mustangs.
  • The Mustangs then traveled to Aberdeen, losing to Northern State 2-0 on Sunday.
SERIES HISTORY
  • This weekend's matchup with Wayne State will mark the 34th meeting between the Mustangs and the Wildcats, with SMSU holding a record of 16-13-4.
  • SMSU's last win against Wayne State came in 2019, and the Wildcats won last year's matchup 4-1.
  • Augustana and SMSU will meet for the 28h time on Sunday, with the Vikings holding a 21-5-1 advantage all time.
  • The last time this matchup was played in Marshall was in 2023 with SMSU winning 3-1.
SCOUTING WAYNE STATE
  • The Dragons are currently 4-3-4 on the season and are 3-3-2 in the NSIC. Last week the Wildcats lost 7-0 in Bismarck to UMary and lost 3-2 to Minot State in Minot on Sunday.
  • The Wildcats are led by head coach Emily Hester in her 5th season at Wayne State.
  • Sophomore forward Morgan Mancuso has scored four goals for the Wildcats this season, the most on the team, and has ten shots on goal.
SCOUTING AUGUSTANA
  • The Vikings are 7-2-2 on the season, and 5-2-1 in the NSIC. The Vikings traveled to Minot on Friday, defeating Minot State 2-1, before traveling to Bismarck on Sunday, losing to UMary 2-0.
  • Augustana are coached by Brandon Barkus in his 20th season at the school.
  • Junior forward Madelyn White currently leads the NSIC in both goals and shots on goal, scoring nine and getting 23 shots on target so far this season.
TEAM LEADERS
  • Senior forward Brooke Wetterstrom currently leads the Mustangs in goals with three, while freshman Virginia Pruitt has two.
  • Sophomore forward Jada Backes leads the team in shots on goal with eight on the season.
  • Kennady Krebs has a .750 save percentage on the season, making 42 saves throughout the season.
HEAD COACH CLAY GLASGOW 
  • Clay Glasgow is in his fourth season as head coach and has a record of 13-41-10 overall, including 12-32-7 in NSIC play. He was hired as the sixth head coach in program history on Feb. 25, 2022.   
  • Glasgow came to SMSU after spending eight seasons (2014-21) as head women's soccer coach at Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) recording a mark of 49-86-5.   
  • During his last two seasons at DWU, the Tigers amassed back-to-back winning seasons and qualified for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament both seasons.
NEXT WEEK
  • The Mustangs stay in Marshall for the weekend with two NSIC matches.
  • On Friday, Oct. 24, SMSU takes on Minot State in their SAAC Game of the Year at 5 p.m.
  • The following Sunday at 1 p.m., the Mustangs take the field against UMary.
