ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team opened the 2025-26 season on Saturday with four place winners at the Yellowjacket Open hosted by Rochester Community & Technical College.
 
Carlo Arreola (unattached) took home first place at 125 pounds with a perfect 5-0 day. He opened with a victory by tech. fall before earning four straight wins by decision.
 
Chase Hanson earned fourth place at 133 pounds winning his first three bouts, including a tech. fall in the quarterfinals, before having to medical forfeit his final two matches.
 
Jonah Anderson, at 184 pounds, lost his first match of the day but rebounded to win four in a row to advance to the fifth-place match before settling for sixth place.
 
Xander Kenworthy put together a strong day finishing 4-1, including winning three matches by fall, to place fifth at 197 pounds.
 
"What a way to open the season! The team wrestled tough, scored points, and kept coming regardless of the situation or the opponent," said Chayse Jackson, SMSU head coach. "We had four placers, but an additional four that would have wrestled for seventh. That shows our athletes and our team are growing and moving in the right direction. We are pushing deep into tournaments, even when we don't place. As a first test, there was a lot to learn, but a lot of positives. Excited to get back into the room and prep for Dakota Wesleyan next weekend. Always developing, always grinding. #horsepower."
 
SMSU returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 8, competing at the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, S.D., starting at 9 a.m.
