MARSHALL, Minn. -- The No. 14 ranked Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team pushed its winning streak to seven straight win a 3-0 victory over UMary on Friday night inside the PE Gym. SMSU won by scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-21.
Leah Jones led the Mustangs in kills with 15, hitting .519, with five digs. Senior
Karli Arkell had her third highest kills total this season with 14, hitting .579, with two total blocks. As a pair, Jones and Arkell hit .543 on the match (29-4-46). Senior
McKenzie Tolk led the team in digs with 10, and
Sydney Thein added 33 assists to her season.
As a team the Mustangs hit .365 (47-12-96) while the Marauders, who were led in kills by Myra Newman with seven, hit .096 (28-19-94).
The Mustangs started the contest strong, and courtesy of three
Ashley Peltier kills and two aces from
Paige Steinmetz, started the first set with an 11-4 advantage. The Marauders could never get into a rythym in the set, and SMSU cruised to a 25-15 first set victory.
The fast start for the Mustangs continued into the second set, and through a handful of kills from
Karli Arkell, started with a 13-3 advantage. Despite a five point swing from UMary, the Mustangs controlled the set, and were victorious 25-16. SMSU hit .481 on 27 swings, while the Marauders hit .029.
The third set, while more competitive than the first two, was still controlled by the Mustangs. A pair of 5-1 runs for SMSU helped make the score 22-15 late in the set. The Marauders kept themselves in the match, going on a 6-2 run late, but the Mustangs put the match out of reach, with
Natalie Pilney delivering the final blow to UMary ending the set 25-21.
SMSU, now 20-6 overall, 13-6 NSIC, will close out the regular season on Saturday with a 2 p.m. match versus Minot State. The match will be streaming live on the NSIC Network.
