KEARNEY, Neb. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team competed in the Younes Hospitality Open Saturday, with seven combined placers in the Amateur and Intermediate groups.
 
In the Amateur group, Wyatt Pollard and Max Wiezorek finished fifth place at 165 lbs. and 174lbs. respectively. Pollard and Wiezorek won three matches, which included one tech fall, one fall and two by sudden victory in the first overtime period. DJ Rock was awarded sixth place in the 184 lbs. division with four wins in the dual including two by fall.
 
Xander Kenworthy at 197 lbs. led the Intermediate group for the Mustangs, finishing second with a record of 2-1. Tate Condezo finished fifth in the 157 lbs. division with a 4-2 record including two victories by fall. Dylan St. Germain and Jonah Anderson were both awarded sixth place finishes highlighted by three decision victories and one major decision.
 
Carlo Arreola, wrestling unattached, finished 3-2 in the elite group at 125 lbs. earning three victories by decision.
 
In total, the Mustangs had 54 wins with 11 falls, 3 tech falls, and four major decisions. 13 athletes finished the day with a record of 2-2 or better.
 
"Great performance by the team today. We continue to grow off of our last competition, made adjustments, and found ways to win matches," said fifth year head coach Chayse Jackson. "I am proud of the fight we showed throughout, putting the most guys on the podium we have ever had at this tournament. The team continues to impress and make gains every week. The Mustangs will travel next to Kenosha, Wis., facing Wisconsin-Parkside for the first NSIC dual of the season for the Mustangs, before competing in the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Ind. on Dec. 13 and 14. SMSU wrestling hosts its first NSIC dual against UMary on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. in the PE Gym.
