MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team ended its 2025 campaign on a high note Thursday afternoon, defeating the Sioux Falls Cougars by a score of 2-1. This is the first win for SMSU against USF since 2022.
The Cougars outshot the Mustangs 16-11, with six on target for Sioux Falls, and five on target for SMSU. The Mustangs however out possessed the Cougars, with 52% possession compared to 48% from USF.
The Mustangs opened the scoring in the first half when
Malorie Maderak put a right footed shot into the bottom left corner, assisted by
Leah Dehne.
SMSU outshot the Cougars 7-3 in the first half and had the majority of possession with 55% in the opening half.
The Cougars battled back, and in the 66
th minute, Olivia Opichka scored her first goal for USF to level the game.
Less than a minute later,
Brooke Wetterstrom scored her fourth goal of the season, a team high, to give the Mustangs the lead again. The goal was again assisted by
Leah Dehne, and by
Sophia Sonnek.
Goalkeeper
Kennady Krebs made five saves, giving her an 83.3% save percentage, while USF goalkeeper Delani Daubman made three saves.
