KENOSHA, Wis. – In its final dual of the regular season, the Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team fell to No. 2 ranked Wisconsin-Parkside by a final score of 47-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Friday night inside De Simone Arena.
SMSU finishes the season 3-12 in duals and 0-8 in NSIC duals.
The dual began with the 125-pound match between
Carlo Arreola and No. 11/12 Shane Corrigan.
Corrigan would secure a pair of two-count near-falls in the first period to lead 4-0 after the first three minutes until scoring another takedown in the second period to lead 7-0 and never looked back in winning the match via 12-2 major decision.
At 133 pounds,
Chase Hanson was pinned at 4:36 by Joey Roti to give the Rangers a 10-0 lead.
141 pounds saw
Dylan Louwagie battle to the second period with No. 1 Cayden Henschel
before also suffering a pin at 4:42.
UWP would build on its lead by picking up a major decision win at 149 pounds and a regular decision win at 157 pounds to move to a 23-0 advantage heading into the five-minute intermission.
No. 18
Sean Howk wrestled for the Mustangs at 157 pounds versus No. 7 Ben Durocher. A stalemate first period led to a highly defensive remainder of the match. Howk secured an escape late in the second period to lead 1-0 after five minutes, but Durocher countered with an escape and takedown with a minute remaining to edge out Howk.
After the intermission, the Rangers would pick up wins at 165,174, and 184 pounds to lead 38-0 with two matches to wrestle.
197 pounds featured
Kody Marschner taking on No. 19 Chase Stegall. The two wrestlers went blow-for-blow leading to an early tie score at 4-4 before Stegall took a fast shot to wrap up Marschner and plant him for the pin to give Parkside a 44-0 lead.
285 pounds saw
Evan Thompson fall to No. 6/7 Lloyd Reynolds via 10-3 decision.
The Mustangs are off for the next two weeks before returning to the mat on March 1 in Sioux Falls, S.D., for the NCAA Super Regional.
"Tough end to the NSIC dual season, but there was good within each match," said SMSU head coach
Chayse Jackson. "Two weeks until the regional championships, so that gives us time to make adjustments and come out the best version of the Mustangs yet. In the postseason, records and rankings don't matter. It comes down to fight and that's what we plan to bring."
