Mustangs win twice on Monday to push streak to 14 games

LEESBURG, Fla. — The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team picked up two more wins on Monday, moving to 12-0 on its spring trip with wins over Slippery Rock (Pa.), 9-6, and Lake Erie (Ohio), 11-2.

SMSU ties its longest win streak of the Division II era set in 2007 with its 14th consecutive win.

Against Slippery Rock, SRC took advantage of a fielding error to take a 1-0 lead at the top of the second inning.

In the bottom of the third, Riley Kramolisch got the Mustangs going by reaching first with a single before Abby Boxrud reached first on a fielding error. Abby Russell singled through the right side and would advance to second on the throw, allowing Kramolisch to score from third to tie the game and putting another Mustang in scoring position. Emma Humpal singled to second base to bait another throwing error by SRC to give the Mustangs the lead.

In the bottom half of the following inning, Kaylee Hafermann reached first on a throwing error before advancing all the way to third off a wild pitch. Kramolisch laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Hafermann to put SMSU up 4-1.

Slippery Rock countered by scoring four runs in the top of the fifth inning to retake the lead 5-4. At the bottom half of the inning, SRC held SMSU to one hit to keep its one run lead before SRC's, Julia Montie doubled to center field which led to another SRC run after a single to the left side.

The Mustangs would use back-to-back singles before loading the bases off a fielder's choice. Down 1-2 in the count, Paris Van Dyke blasted a ball to right center for a triple that cleared the bases and put SMSU up 7-6. Van Dyke would score off a fielding error before a fielder's choice would plate SMSU's final run of the game.

Jordyn Marsh (5-2) earned the win against Slippery Rock after limiting SRC to two hits and one earned run while striking out two in 2 1/3 innings.

SMSU gathered 11 hits in the win with Riley Kramolisch leading the bats going 3 for 5 at the plate with an RBI.

Lake Erie would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning.

In the top of the second saw Emma Humpal use a hit-by-pitch and steal to put a runner in scoring position with no outs before Van Dyke tripled to the right center gap to score Humpal and tie the game. Van Dyke would score off a wild pitch to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.

The game fell quiet until the Storm opened the bottom of the fourth with a double to put a runner in scoring position. LEC would tie the game from a fielding error by second base.

The Mustangs would have a huge response in the top of the fifth, with Grace Anderson starting the inning off with a double to left center. Kaylee Hafermann would also walk to force a fielder's choice in the following at-bat which allowed Riley Kramolisch to reach first, and Anderson to move to third.

A throwing error by the LEC catcher would plate one run and Kramolisch into scoring position. Back-to-back doubles by Abby Boxrud and Abby Russell would plate two more runs. The Mustangs were not done there, as Russell would advance to third from a steal and after a single by Humpal would score Russell.

The hit caused a pitching change for the Storm, but that did not stop SMSU as they would use back-back singles to load the bases with two outs. Another error would plate the final two runs of the inning to put SMSU up 9-2.

Jordyn Marsh entered the circle for the Mustangs and would strike out two of three batters to retire LEC.

SMSU's final two runs came in the top of the sixth off a Russell double to left center to plate Boxrud and Kramolisch.

Jordan Bussey entered for one batter and struck her out to close the game.

SMSU recorded 12 hits in the win over Lake Erie, with Van Dyke, Russell, Kramolisch, and Boxrud all tallying a pair of hits while Abby Russell recorded three RBIs.

Morgyn Otte (4-2) earned the win against the Storm after limiting LEC to five hits and two unearned runs while striking out two in four innings. Jordyn Marsh tossed 1 2/3 innings in relief, striking out three batters and limited LEC to zero hits and zero runs.

The Mustangs are back in action in Lakeland, Fla., on Tuesday, March 11, with a doubleheader against Florida Southern, with the first pitch of game one set for 4 p.m. CDT.
