Mustangs collect 21 hits to sweep Marauders on Friday

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team notched 21 hits to sweep the University of Mary by scores of 9-1 (five innings) and 10-7 in an NSIC doubleheader at Mustang Field on Friday afternoon.

UMary drops to 9-24 on the season and 2-6 in the NSIC, while SMSU improves to 22-12 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

In game one, Karlie Miller (9-5) tossed a complete game three-hitter, allowing one first inning run, while recording one strikeout.

The Marauders got their lone run of game one in the first inning off a home run.

The Mustangs responded quickly and put the pedal to metal to cruise to a run-rule victory.

An Emma Humpal single plated the tying run before Paris Van Dyke singled to right center to put SMSU on top. The third Mustang run of the inning would come from a wild pitch.

The following inning would see SMSU tack on two more runs kicked off by a Riley Kramolisch triple before Abby Boxrud would hit a double to bring Kramolisch home. Another Humpal single to right field would plate another run to put SMSU up 5-1.

Once again, Humpal would hit to left field for an RBI single before Van Dyke would drive a ball deep to center field for a double to send Humpal home.

The Mustangs loaded the bases in the bottom half of the fifth inning before a clutch single by Kramolisch scored two more runs to end the game due to mercy rule.

SMSU tallied 12 hits with Emma Humpal going 3 for 3 at the plate and recording three RBIs, while Riley Kramolisch finished 4 for 4 with a pair of RBIs and a team-high three runs scored.

Morgyn Otte (7-5) earned the win in game two allowing four earned runs on seven hits, while striking out a pair in 4 2/3 innings. Jordyn Marsh logged her sixth save of the season, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out a pair of batters in 2 1/3 innings.

Back-to-back throwing errors off a sac bunt allowed SMSU to score its first two runs in game two before the Mustangs went up 4-0 after Grace Anderson hit a two-run single to right field.

After a few quiet innings, the Marauders would plate two runs from a double to left center in the top of the fourth.

Four Mustang singles would plate two more runs and force the Marauders to make a pitching change. SMSU would build an 8-2 lead after a throwing error and an RBI double by Humpal.

UMary responded by using a pair of RBI singles to cut the deficit to four runs.

In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Grace Anderson slammed the ball out of the park for her first collegiate home run.

UMary again countered, this time with a three-run home run to cut SMSU's lead to two runs.

The Mustangs' final run of the game came from a wild pitch to push their lead to 10-7.

SMSU recorded nine hits with Grace Anderson going 3 for 4 at the plate, tallying three RBIs and a home run.

The Mustangs return to the diamond on Saturday (Mar. 29) for a doubleheader against Minot State, the series was originally scheduled to be played in Marshall, but due to inclement weather, it has been moved to the MSU dome in Mankato, Minn. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
