Wildcats hit four home runs to move past Mustangs

WAYNE, Neb. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team suffered a pair of losses on the road, 9-1 (five innings) and 4-1, to the Wayne State Wildcats in a NSIC doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.

SMSU drops to 22-16 on the year and 4-8 in NSIC play, while WSC moves to 21-12 overall and 6-3 in the conference.

Karlie Miller (9-7) was dealt the loss in game one after allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits and three walks in four innings.

SMSU scored its lone run of the game in the top of the first inning, with Abby Boxrud zipping around the bases to score on a throwing error and put SMSU up 1-0.

However, the lead would not last long as WSC's Lillie Timm launched a ball over the center field wall to plate three runs in the bottom of the inning and give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.

Both teams would be held hitless until the bottom of the third, when Wayne State put its first two batters on base before a throwing error at second base allowed the fourth Wildcat run to score.

WSC kept the pressure on, using five hits and an error to plate five more runs and end the game by run-rule in the bottom of the fifth.

SMSU was limited to three hits in game one, while WSC recorded 11 hits.

Morgyn Otte (7-6) was tabbed with the loss in game two, allowing four earned runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out three in four innings. Jordyn Marsh entered in the fifth inning and held the Wildcats hitless while recording three strikeouts.

SMSU was held hitless through the first three innings as Wayne State built a 3-0 lead. A two-run home run to left center put the Wildcats on the board before a sac fly scored the third run of the inning.

Grace Anderson came through with a two-out RBI single down the left field line in the top of the fourth, but the rally would stall after a pop out ended the inning.

The Wildcats hit another home run in the bottom of the fourth to add another insurance run, and never looked back in closing out the game.

SMSU continues NSIC play on the road this weekend with doubleheaders at St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth on April 5-6.
