Mustangs drop doubleheader to Warriors on Friday

MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team fell twice in a pair of games to the Winona State Warriors at Mustang Field on Friday afternoon.

SMSU fell 8-0 in six innings in the opener before dropping game two 5-1.

The Mustangs drop to 28-22 overall and 10-14 in the NSIC while WSU jumps to 36-11 on the year and 17-5 in the conference.

Karlie Miller (12-10) was given the loss in game one after allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and five walks while recording three strikeouts. Jordan Bussey allowed the eighth run in one inning of relief while striking out one.

An rbi single to left center scored the Warriors' first run before retiring the Mustangs in order to start the game. Another pair of hits and a walk scored three more WSU runs in the second before each offense went quiet until the fifth inning.

The Warriors used four hits and an error to move to a 7-0 lead after five innings before playing their final run in the sixth off a wild pitch.

The Mustangs went down in order to close the game.

Morgyn Otte (10-9) was dealt the game two loss after allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out two. Jordyn Marsh threw the final two innings of relief, holding the Warriors to one hit while striking out a pair.

Similarly to game one, the Warriors put a run on the board right away in the first using a double down the left field line.

SMSU's lone threat of the day came in the bottom of the second with Emma Humpal singling through the left side before moving the to second off a sac bunt and third on a wild pitch.

A groundout and fly out would end the inning and cut the threat short.

WSU would score twice more in the third before a two-run home run by Kiley Slaats in the top of the fifth put the Warriors up 5-0 after five innings.

SMSU would be held hitless in the fifth and sixth innings before making a rally attempt in the seventh. A double and a walk with one out set up Lexi Ingalls, who singled down the right field line to score the lone Mustang run of the day.

An untimely strikeout and groundout would close the game and leave two runners stranded.

SMSU is back in action tomorrow, welcoming Concordia-St. Paul for a doubleheader on Senior Day, beginning at noon.
