PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team defeated the Maryville (Mo.) Saints in their fourth straight sweep of the season, 25-20, 25-21, and 25-15.
Leah Jones led the team in kills with 14, while hitting .250.
Natalie Pilney broke her season high in kills with 12, a record she previously set on Thursday against Southern Nazarene, while hitting .524.
Mya Krystosek added 11 kills with 13 digs, making that her fourth double double on the season.
McKenzie Tolk led the team in digs with 23, her third game of 20 or more digs, and
Sydney Thein had a team high 44 assists.
The Mustangs as a team hit .257 (49-14-136), while the Saints, led by Ella Brinkman with 15 kills, hit .117 (33-18-128).
The first set was a story of streaks, with Maryville getting out to an early 8-5 lead before SMSU went on a 7-1 run to lead the set 12-9. The Saints answered with their own 5-0 run, leading the match 14-12, when the Mustangs came alive again, going on a 9-3 run, and holding on to win the set 25-20.
SMSU started the second set on fire, getting a 13-4 lead at one point. Maryville went on an 8-2 run to make the set 15-12 in favor of the Mustangs, and the Saints continued to put on the pressure, getting to within one-point multiple times in the set. But a late Mustangs run sealed the second set, 25-21.
The third set was much more in favor for the Mustangs, and after gaining a 6-5 advantage, went on a 9-2 run, and their lead never looked in danger, as SMSU won the final set 25-15.
