SMSU soccer starts NSIC play with two away matches this weekend

THIS WEEK
  • The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team (1-2) starts NSIC action with two matches away from home this weekend.
  • The Mustangs start the weekend against Bemidji State on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
  • Then on Sunday, the Mustangs complete their away trip against Minnesota Duluth at 12 p.m.
  • Both games are available to watch on the NSIC Network.
LAST WEEK
  • The Mustangs ended non-conference action, playing against Upper Iowa at the Schwan REC last Friday and Fort Hays State in Hays, Kan. on Sunday.
  • SMSU lost against Upper Iowa 1-0, conceding a goal in the last five minutes of the match.
  • The Mustangs lost to Fort Hays State 3-0.
SERIES HISTORY
  • This weekend's matchup with Bemidji State will mark the 30th meeting between the Mustangs and the Beavers, with SMSU holding a record of 11-13-5.
  • Bemidji State won last year's matchup 2-1.
  • Minnesota Duluth and SMSU will meet for the 34th time on Sunday, with the Bulldogs holding a 25-7-1 advantage.
  • Last year's meeting resulted in a 1-1 tie.
SCOUTING BEMIDJI STATE
  • The Beavers are currently 2-1 on the season and are 1-0 in the NSIC after defeating Minnesota Duluth 3-1 last Friday.
  • The Beavers are led by head coach Jim Stone in his 22nd season at Bemidji State.
  • NSIC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Katrina Barthelt is in great form already, scoring the lone goal in their win against Northwest Missouri State, and contributing for every goal against Minnesota Duluth with two goals and an assist.
SCOUTING MINNESOTA DULUTH
  • The Bulldogs are 1-1-1 on the season, and 0-1 in the NSIC after dropping a game to Bemidji on Friday.
  • Minnesota Duluth is coached by Greg Cane in his 32nd season at the school.
  • Sophomore defender Kaitlyn Beavers has the lone goal in the Bulldogs season, in the team's 1-0 win over Michigan Tech.
2025 OUTLOOK 
  • SMSU head coach Clay Glasgow, entering his fourth season, returns 11 letter winners from 2024 and features six seniors, seven sophomores, five sophomores, and six freshmen. 
  • The Mustangs are hoping to rely on seniors Brooke Wetterstrom and Laney Brill, who were selected as an NSIC 'Player to Watch'. 
  • Junior Malorie Maderak, who scored three goals last season, will hope to add to her career total, meanwhile juniors Illjana Arbaugh and Sophia Sonnek will look to solidify the Mustang defense after playing in all 18 games last season. 
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Stella Litzen returns after starting in five games last season, making 23 saves in those games. 
HEAD COACH CLAY GLASGOW 
  • Clay Glasgow is in his fourth season as head coach and has a record of 12-34-10 overall, including 11-25-7 in NSIC play. He was hired as the sixth head coach in program history on Feb. 25, 2022.   
  • Glasgow came to SMSU after spending eight seasons (2014-21) as head women's soccer coach at Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) recording a mark of 49-86-5.   
  • During his last two seasons at DWU, the Tigers amassed back-to-back winning seasons and qualified for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament both seasons.

  • The Mustangs start a four-game home stretch with a pair of matches next weekend.
  • Parents Day will be on Friday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. against MSU Moorhead.
  • Senior Day is on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. against Minnesota Crookston
