SMSU soccer starts four game home stretch this weekend

THIS WEEK
  • The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team (1-4, 0-2 NSIC) start a four-game home streak this weekend
  • The Mustangs start the weekend on Parents Day against MSU Moorhead on Friday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m.
  • Then on Sunday, the Mustangs complete the week on Senior Day against Minnesota Crookston at 1 p.m.

LAST WEEK
  • The Mustangs began NSIC play in a two-game road trip against Bemidji State and Minnesota Duluth.
  • SMSU lost against Bemidji State 3-1, with forward Leah Dehne scoring her first collegiate goal for the Mustangs.
  • The Mustangs lost to Minnesota Duluth 2-0.
SERIES HISTORY
  • This weekend's matchup with MSU Moorhead will mark the 34th meeting between the Mustangs and the Dragons, with SMSU holding a record of 16-14-3.
  • SMSU won last year's matchup 3-1 and have won four of the last five matchups in the series.
  • Minnesota Crookston and SMSU will meet for the 29h time on Sunday, with the Mustangs holding a 24-3-1 advantage.
  • The Mustangs won last year's matchup 2-0 and have won seven in a row against the Golden Eagles, dating back to 2017.
SCOUTING MSU MOORHEAD
  • The Dragons are currently 1-3-1 on the season and are 0-2 in the NSIC after losing to Augustana and Wayne State last Friday and Sunday respectively.
  • The Dragons are led by head coach Scott Forster in his 2nd season at MSU Moorhead.
  • Sophomore midfielder Sophie Thompson has scored one of three goals for the Dragons this season and is second on the team with five shots on goal.
SCOUTING MINNESOTA CROOKSTON
  • The Golden Eagles are 1-3-1 on the season, and 0-2 in the NSIC after losing to both Wayne State and Augustana. Their lone win came in a non-conference clash with MSU Moorhead.
  • Minnesota Crookston is coached by Danny Burnstein in his 1st season at the school.
  • 'Offensive Player to Watch' Elise Lefers has one of three goals for the Golden Eagles on the season.
2025 OUTLOOK 
  • SMSU head coach Clay Glasgow, entering his fourth season, returns 11 letter winners from 2024 and features six seniors, seven sophomores, five sophomores, and six freshmen. 
  • The Mustangs are hoping to rely on seniors Brooke Wetterstrom and Laney Brill, who were selected as an NSIC 'Player to Watch'. 
  • Junior Malorie Maderak, who scored three goals last season, will hope to add to her career total, meanwhile juniors Illjana Arbaugh and Sophia Sonnek will look to solidify the Mustang defense after playing in all 18 games last season. 
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Stella Litzen returns after starting in five games last season, making 23 saves in those games. 
HEAD COACH CLAY GLASGOW 
  • Clay Glasgow is in his fourth season as head coach and has a record of 12-36-10 overall, including 11-27-7 in NSIC play. He was hired as the sixth head coach in program history on Feb. 25, 2022.   
  • Glasgow came to SMSU after spending eight seasons (2014-21) as head women's soccer coach at Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) recording a mark of 49-86-5.   
  • During his last two seasons at DWU, the Tigers amassed back-to-back winning seasons and qualified for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament both seasons.
NEXT WEEK
  • Cancer Awareness Day is on Friday, Oct. 3 against NSIC preseason favorites Minnesota State.
  • The Mustangs end their four-game home stretch against St. Cloud State on Sunday, Oct. 5.
