SMSU soccer host two unbeaten NSIC schools this weekend

THIS WEEK
  • The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team (2-5, 1-3 NSIC) finish their four-game home stretch with matches on Friday and Sunday at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
  • The Mustangs start the weekend on Cancer Awareness Day against No. 2 ranked Minnesota State (6-0-1, 4-0 NSIC) on Friday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m.
  • Then on Sunday, Oct. 5, the Mustangs complete the week against St. Cloud State (5-0-2, 3-0-1 NSIC) at 1 p.m.

LAST WEEK
  • The Mustangs made their home conference debut last Friday against Minnesota State Moorhead and last Sunday against Minnesota Crookston.
  • SMSU lost against MSUM 3-2, after being up at halftime 2-1, conceding two second half goals against the Dragons. Jada Backes and Malorie Maderak were the goal scorers for the Mustangs.
  • On Senior Day, Brooke Wetterstrom scored the lone goal of the match Sunday, defeating the Golden Eagles 1-0 and giving the Mustangs their first conference win of the season.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Friday's matchup against the Minnesota State Mavericks will be the 26th time the two teams meet. The Mavericks hold a 23-1-1 advantage in the series all time.
  • The Mustangs lone win in the series was in 2013.
  • St. Cloud State and SMSU will meet for the 31st time on Sunday, with the Huskies holding a 16-10-4 advantage.
  • The Mustangs are 2-1-2 against the Huskies in the last five meetings between the two.
SCOUTING MINNESOTA STATE
  • The Mavericks are unbeaten this season at 6-0-1, 4-0 NSIC, defeating both ranked Central Missouri and Grand Valley State in non-conference play.
  • The Mavericks are led by head coach Brian Bahl in his 13th season at Minnesota State.
  • Sophomore forward Marin Johnson is the Mavericks leading goal scorer, tallying three in her campaign so far, adding two assists.
SCOUTING ST. CLOUD STATE
  • The Huskies are also unbeaten to start the season at 5-0-2, 3-0-1 NSIC, and last weekend defeated both Jamestown and Northern State.
  • St. Cloud State is coached by Gretta Macdonald in her 12th season at the school.
  • 'Offensive Player to Watch' Ellie Primerano has scored three goals for the Huskies, tied for the most on the team.
HEAD COACH CLAY GLASGOW 
  • Clay Glasgow is in his fourth season as head coach and has a record of 13-37-10 overall, including 12-28-7 in NSIC play. He was hired as the sixth head coach in program history on Feb. 25, 2022.   
  • Glasgow came to SMSU after spending eight seasons (2014-21) as head women's soccer coach at Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) recording a mark of 49-86-5.   
  • During his last two seasons at DWU, the Tigers amassed back-to-back winning seasons and qualified for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament both seasons.
NEXT WEEK
  • The Mustangs are back on the road, first facing Jamestown on Friday, Oct. 10, at 2:30 p.m.
  • SMSU then ends the week against Northern State on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. in Aberdeen.
