PENSACOLA – Fla. – The Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs swept the Wheeling (W Va.) Cardinals in their final match of the SpringHill Suites Invitational, 25-11, 25-12, 25-19. This completes their trip to Florida, going 4-0 and being the only team in the tournament to do so.
Leah Jones led the team in kills for the second game in a row with 13, hitting .458, adding eight digs.
Mya Krystosek and
Natalie Pilney were the only other Mustangs in double figure kills, with 11 and 10 respectively.
Kennedy Drake led the team with three service aces, while
McKenzie Tolk led the team in digs with nine. Setter
Sydney Thein racked up 37 assists and four digs.
The Mustangs as a team hit .381 (49-9-105), while the Cardinals hit .110 (26-16-91). Cami Black led the Cardinals with 11 kills.
In the first set, the Mustangs dominated, getting a 9-0 run early, and never looking back. SMSU had five blocks in the period, and hit .412, winning the set 25-11.
The second set was much of the same, the Mustangs hit .389 throughout the period, and at one point lead 21-6 before Wheeling started to mount a rally. But it was too little too late, as SMSU won 25-12.
The third set was much more competitive than the first two, with Wheeling hitting their best at .179, but it was not enough, as the Mustangs hit nearly double at .343, and won the match 25-19.
The Mustangs play next week in the Pittsburg State (Kan.) Invitational on Sept. 11 and 12.
