MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team fell to the UMary Marauders Thursday night by a score of 43-6.
The Mustangs secured two decision victories on the night, while the Marauders earned three wins by fall, two by tech fall, two by major decision, and one by forfeit.
"Overall, tonight was a testament to our growth and our ability to respond under pressure," said fifth-year head coach
Chayse Jackson. "After falling behind in several matches before intermission, we reset and came out with a scrappy mindset that sparked some impressive individual upsets. That toughness and resilience define who we are as a program. This next dual will continue to challenge us and push our growth — and we're excited to bring the #Horsepower back home again soon."
The Mustangs started the night off having to forfeit the first bout at 285 lbs. with
Evan Thompson injured.
Preston Xayachak and
Chase Hanson were both defeated by fall, leaving the score 18-0 after three bouts.
AJ Polansky and
Jake Messner followed, suffering the same fate, falling by TF and fall, leaving the Mustangs in a 29-0 hole after five bouts.
Tate Condezo gave the Mustangs their first win of the dual, defeating Maverick Mueller 9-7, and improving his record to 19-12 on the season.
Wyatt Pollard could not follow up Condezo's win however, losing by tech fall.
Noah Jensen and
Mason Buss were both defeated by major decision.
Xander Kenworthy gave the Mustangs their second win on the final dual of the match, defeating Ty Wiedrich 8-4.
SMSU is back in action at the PE Gym on Saturday, facing No. 13 ranked St. Cloud State at 2 p.m. The dual will be streamed live on the NSIC Network. Tickets and more information can be found at smsumustangs.com/sports/wrestling.
