MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team was defeated Saturday afternoon by the No. 13 ranked St. Cloud State Huskies 46-0. The Huskies earned three wins by MD, two by fall, two by decision, two by TF, and one by forfeit.

"Although the scoreboard doesn't show it, we had great effort up and down the lineup," said fifth-year head coach Chayse Jackson. "In almost every single match our guys found offensive points and won positions that put them in a position to win. Especially with a lineup in flux, it was great to see every guy step on the line willing to fight for the mustangs. Facing the top 3 teams in the conference is tough, but now we get a chance to reset, learn, and prep for a long weekend trip next week to Moorhead and Minot. The Mustangs started open at heavyweight with Evan Thompson unable to wrestle, giving SCSU's Jadon Mims the win, and the Huskies a 6-0 lead to start the dual.
 
In the first dual of the match at 125 lbs., Austin Grzywinski defeated Dylan St. Germain of SMSU 11-3 earning the MD for the Huskies.
 
SMSU's Chase Hanson was deadlocked with Mason Mills 6-6 after two periods at 133 lbs., but Mills pulls away late with takedown and near-fall in third period, taking the bout 15-8.
 
AJ Polansky suffered a TF loss to SCSU's Rowdy Neighbor 20-2 in the second period.
 
At 141 lbs. SMSU's Brand Beaver starts strong, earning pair of takedowns. However, SCSU's Joeren Smith pulls away late in the third period, defeating Beaver 17-7 by MD with riding time.
 
Patrick Kubisa for SCSU gained a takedown in the second period, which proved to be the difference over SMSU's Jake Messner at 157 lbs., defeating Messner 5-1.
 
Wyatt Pollard was defeated by the Huskies' Colton Bornholdt by fall in the first period, giving SCSU a 31-0 lead with three bouts remaining.
 
After a close first period, SMSU's DJ Rock was pinned in the second round by Brody Hart, giving the Huskies a 37-0 lead after the 174 lbs. match.
 
Carter Paulson could not come up with an answer for the Mustangs, as he was defeated by SCSU's Brendan Heying by TF in the first round, giving the Huskies a 42-0 lead heading into the final bout.
 
At 197 lbs., Xander Kenworthy fell behind 10-2 after the first two period, and despite a takedown in the third period, was defeated 15-5.
 
SMSU is on the road next weekend, facing Minnesota State Moorhead on Friday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m., before traveling west facing Minot State the following Sunday at 12 p.m. Both matches will be streaming live on the NSIC Network. More information can be found at smsumustangs.com/sports/wrestling.
