SMSU wrestling host NSU and UJ for final duals in PE Gym this season

MARSHALL, Minn. – Fresh off a win over Minot State last Sunday, the Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team return to the PE Gym this weekend for the final two home duals. The Mustangs face the Northern State Wolves on Friday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. for Alumni Day. Then the following day, SMSU faces the Jamestown Jimmies at 5 p.m. for Senior Night/Rave Night.

Last weekend the Mustangs traveled north, first facing the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons last Friday, dropping the contest 28-13 and earning three individual wins in the process. SMSU then traveled west for Sunday's matchup with the Minot State Beavers, winning 24-15. The Mustangs had five individual wins in the dual, including three by fall, in SMSU's first win against Minot State since 2020.

Fifth-year head coach Chayse Jackson will be using 15 athletes as a part of his probable lineup for the two duals this weekend.

Northern State holds a 5-3 record on the season, with a 2-3 record in the NSIC, including wins over Minnesota State Moorhead, #17 ranked Central Missouri, and #RV Quincy (Ill.). The Wolves have two wrestlers ranked in the top 15 of their respective weight classes and are receiving votes in the most recent DII NWCA Team Rankings (Jan. 22.).

Jamestown has a dual record of 1-6, 0-6 in the NSIC. The lone win on the season for the Jimmies came on Jan. 13, against Dickinson State. Jamestown does not have a wrestler ranked in the top 15 and are not ranked in the DII NWCA Team Rankings.

After this weekend, the Mustangs have two duals left in the season, facing Augustana on Friday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m., and Minnesota State on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the duals this weekend and more information can be found at smsumustangs.com/sports/wrestling.
