MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team was defeated Friday evening by the Northern State Wolves 48-0. The Wolves had two wins each by forfeit, fall, technical fall, major decision, and decision.
"Tough loss, but a strong fight from our guys. With our lineup shuffled around, every guy still stepped on the mat to compete. The results weren't what we wanted, but they should fuel us heading into tomorrow. I'm excited to see a motivated, slightly ticked-off Mustang team rolling into Rave Night. Just like last weekend, it's time to reset our mindset and get back in the fight."
The dual began at 197 lbs., with the Mustangs being open at both 197 and 285 lbs. with
Xander Kenworthy and
Evan Thompson being unable to compete.
Preston Xayachak fell victim to NSU's Sloan Johannsen by technical fall 19-4 in the second round, giving the Wolves a 17-0 lead after three bouts.
Chase Hanson and
Bronson Richins could not put the Mustangs on the board, dropping the 133 and 141 lbs. matches 10-4 and 13-2.
Jake Messner had the best chance to win for the Mustangs, earning a takedown in the first period. However, NSU's Cole Holien earned a late takedown in the third period, securing the win for the Wolves and giving them a 27-0 lead.
Tate Condezo suffered a TF loss to Griffin Lundeen 16-0 in the second period, and
Wyatt Pollard lost by MD at 165 lbs. to Izaak Hunsley.
Noah Jensen and
Carter Paulson both suffered losses by fall in the first period at 184 and 197 lbs., ending the dual at 48-0 favoring Northern State.
The Mustangs are back in the PE Gym Saturday evening for Senior Night / Rave Night against Jamestown at 5 p.m. The dual will be streaming live on the NSIC Network.
