MARSHALL, Minn. – In the final home dual for senior wrestlers
Chase Hanson and
Jake Messner, Southwest Minnesota State came out on top, defeating the Jamestown Jimmies 27-15. The Mustangs earned six victories in total, with two by forfeit, and one each by decision, tech fall, major decision, and sudden victory.
"Great response from the team. The PE gym was electric for Rave night and the crowd pushed the momentum in our favor," said fifth-year head coach
Chayse Jackson. "The team came out with a chip on their shoulder and wrestled gritty, tough matches, including a few come from behind wins. Exciting to see that fight two weeks in a row, and looking forward to hitting the road for our last few duals before returning to the RA for regionals. Let's Rave!"
The dual began at 285 lbs., with Jamestown at an open weight class,
Evan Thompson earned the six-point victory for SMSU.
Dylan St. Germain followed that with a last-second TF of Isaac Ronquillo 20-5 at 125 lbs., giving the Mustangs an 11-0 lead after two events.
Chase Hanson could not continue the winning streak for SMSU, dropping the 133 lbs. match 11-4 to Elijah Nose, putting the Jimmies on the board. However, UJ was once again open at 141 lbs., giving
Bronson Richins a six-point victory, making the score 17-3 in favor of SMSU.
Alvy Henderson defeated SMSU's
Jake Messner in the 149 lbs. match 5-3, earning the decision win, leaving the score at the halfway point 17-6.
After the intermission,
Tate Condezo put the Mustangs back in winning ways, earning a 12-7 decision victory over UJ's Ethan Holstein at 157 lbs., extending the SMSU lead to 20-6.
Wyatt Pollard had to dig deep in the third period against Jamestown's Rocky Aguilar, earning two late takedowns, sending the match 165 lbs. match to overtime. Pollard earned a takedown in overtime, winning the match 14-11, and earning his first NSIC dual win in the process.
Noah Jensen could not follow up with an offensive attack, leading to a 4-2 victory for Jamestown's Colton Schaad, making the score 23-9 in favor of SMSU.
In the second period of the 184 lbs. match,
Mason Buss suffered an injury and was unable to continue, giving Hayden Ramaeker the victory.
In the last match of the dual,
Xander Kenworthy defeated Dane Hartmann by major decision 11-2, ending the dual with a final score of 27-15.
SMSU is in Sioux Falls, S.D., next week facing the Augustana Vikings on Friday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. The match will be streaming live on the NSIC Network.
