Mustangs drop final NSIC match of the season against Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team concluded the 2025-26 NSIC season with a 46-0 loss to Minnesota State on Thursday night. The Mavericks had two wins by fall, four by tech fall, and two by both major decision and decisions.

"Hats off to the Mavericks. Tonight they wrestled for the retiring coach Jim Makovsky. That said we still showed up had a lot of fight and found a way to score and win specific positions," said fifth-year head coach Chayse Jackson. "Although the matches didn't fall our way, I'm proud of the fight and I'm looking forward to the small adjustments that we can make leading into the regional championships. It's gonna be one heck of a weekend hosting the regional championships inside the RA for the first time in 18 years. Looking forward to the challenge, I'm looking forward to punching some tickets!"

DJ Rock kicked off the dual for the Mustangs at 184 lbs., wrestling for the injured Mason Buss, and was defeated 18-2 by tech fall by Jaquan East.

Xander Kenworthy and Evan Thompson could not put the Mustangs on the board at 197 lbs., and 285 lbs., with Kenworthy dropping the match by decision 8-4 and Thompson suffering the same fate at 6-1.

Preston Xayachak was defeated by MSU's Jacob Fitzpatrick by a second-round tech fall 19-4 in the 125 lbs. match

Chase Hanson and Bronson Richins both then suffered major decision losses in the 133 lbs., and 141 lbs. matches, with Hanson losing 15-1 and Richins dropping his match 10-2.

The streak continued for MSU in the 149 lbs. match, with Jake Messner losing by tech fall 18-3 to the Mavericks' Walker Bents.

Brand Beaver, wrestling for Tate Condezo, and Wyatt Pollard both were defeated by first round falls in the 157 and 165 lbs. weight classes respectively.

In the final match of the evening, Noah Jensen could not find the scoresheet for the Mustangs, losing by TF 21-6 in the second round to MSU's Drake Hayward.

SMSU is hosting the NCAA Super Region V tournament on Saturday, Feb. 28, with the tournament beginning at 10 a.m. Tickets are available to purchase at smsumustangs.com/sports/wrestling on the Super Region page.
