SMSU softball sweeps UIU in non-conference doubleheader

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (5-3) hosted the Upper Iowa Peacocks (1-11) on Sunday afternoon in Sioux Center, Iowa, in a non-conference doubleheader. The Mustangs were the victors in both games, winning 7-0 in game one, and 8-0 in game two (five inning game).
 
GAME ONE
 
Jordyn Marsh (4-0) pitched a complete game shutout, her first shutout of the season, allowing just five hits and one walk, striking out 11 batters.
 
The Mustangs were led at the plate by Marsh and Aliza Acker, both with two hits, and Marsh earning three RBIs batting. Marsh and Acker were two of eight Mustangs with hits in the game.
 
All seven runs for SMSU came in the first two innings, with five coming in the bottom of the first. Marsh drove in two runs with a single up the middle, with Acker and Riley Kramolisch coming in to score the game's first runs.
 
After Paris Van Dyke walked the next at-bat, Lexi Ingalls cracked a triple off the wall, scoring both Marsh and Van Dyke. Carley Stych then drove in Ingalls later in the inning, leaving the score 5-0 after one.
 
In the second inning, with Kaylee Hafermann on second base, Emma Humpal drove a single through the left side, allowing the center fielder to score the sixth run of the game. One batter later, Jordyn Marsh again singled up the middle, sending Humpal home for the seventh and final run of the contest.
 
UIU's Cara Farnam (0-2) was credited with the loss, pitching all seven innings and striking out two batters. First baseman Emma Tautges led the Peacocks with two hits.
 
GAME TWO
 
Freshman pitcher Ramsey Hopp (1-2) was awarded with her first collegiate victory in game two, pitching five innings, allowing five hits and one walk, with three strikeouts.
 
Emma Humpal and Ava Rud led the Mustangs with two hits each. Humpal also led SMSU with three RBIs. Grace Anderson, Aliza Acker, and Kennah Bretschneider also had hits in the game.
 
Humpal began the scoring fest for the Mustangs in the first inning, driving in Anderson on a double into right center.
 
Carley Stych earned an RBI from a groundout in the second inning, before Anderson put a single into left field, sending in Riley Kramolisch and Lexi Ingalls, making the score 4-0 after two.
 
Emma Humpal smacked a fly ball past the left field wall in the third inning for her second home run of the season, the fourth in her career, extending the score to 5-0 in favor of SMSU.
 
Humpal drove in her third run of the game in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly into left field, allowing Kramolisch to score.
 
The game ended on a Carley Stych bunt, after a throwing error by UIU allowed Ingalls and Kennach Bretschneider to score, ending the game at 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Upper Iowa's Mara Sivley (0-3) pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing eight runs (four unearned), walking three batters, and striking out one Mustang.
 
SMSU is back in Sioux Center next Monday, Feb. 23, hosting a doubleheader against Nebraska-Kearney with game
