SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team was defeated Friday evening by the No. 11 ranked Augustana Vikings by a score of 47-0. Augustana had two wins by fall, five tech falls, and one win by major decision, decision, and sudden victory.
"Tough loss to a top level team, but great fight from the guys. I loved to see the intensity and the aggression we showed tonight," said fifth-year head coach
Chayse Jackson. "We went down looking to score, and gave ourselves in opportunity in several matches to take out a ranked kid. Looking forward to the next week of training as we prep for our last NSIC dual of the year!"
Preston Xayachak prevented further damage early, gaining a late takedown against Christian Olsen at 125 lbs., dropping the first match 14-7.
Chase Hanson had the best chance to win for SMSU in the dual, taking the 133 lbs. match to overtime at 2-2., but could not finish the job against Braiden Kort losing 7-2.
Bronson Richins and
Brand Beaver could not get the Mustangs into the match at 141 and 149 lbs., with Richins losing by TF 21-6 to Luke Koenen, and Beaver dropping the 149 lbs. match by fall in the opening period to Nolan Ambrose.
Tate Condezo and
Wyatt Pollard suffered the same fate at 157 and 165 lbs., with Condezo losing by TF and Pollard losing by fall in the first period.
Noah Jensen,
DJ Rock, and Xender Kenworthy all lost their matches by TF in the second period, leaving the score at 42-0 going into the heavyweight bout.
Evan Thompson could not put the Mustangs on the board at 285 lbs., dropping his match 9-0 to Jaret Peterson.
The Mustangs are on the road again next week, facing Minnesota State in Mankato on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m.
