ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (2-2) ended the weekend in St. Cloud with a 2-2 record in the Kelly Laas Tournament, facing Bemidji State and a rematch with Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday.
SMSU vs. Bemidji State
A four-run first inning carried the Mustangs to a 7-1 victory over the Bemidji State Beavers.
Jordyn Marsh (2-0) had a complete game, nine strikeout outing, allowing four hits and one run with no walks.
SMSU had six hits with one home run and one triple.
Emma Humpal opened the scoring for in the game with a 2-run triple, before Jordyn Marsh hit the first home run of the season for SMSU the next at bat, leaving the score at 4-0 in favor of the Mustangs.
BSU scored on an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, making the score 4-1 after one.
Kennah Bretschneider brought in a run in the top of the third inning on a groundout to the shortstop, extending the Mustangs lead to 5-1.
Grace Anderson singled up the middle for two more RBIs in the fifth inning.
BSU (0-3) finished the game with four hits.
SMSU vs. Concordia-St. Paul
The Mustang suffered an 11-3 defeat to CSP in the second game of the afternoon, with the game finishing in six innings.
SMSU finished the game with 10 hits. Freshman Carley Stych had two RBIs and was one of four players with two hits, including Riley Kramolisch, Aliza Acker, and Ava Rud.
Jordan Bussey (0-1) started the game for the Mustangs going one inning allowing five earned runs and eight walks with two strikeouts. Ramsey Hopp entered the game for SMSU in the second, allowing 10 hits and six runs (five earned) with two walks and one strikeouts.
CSP (2-1) had five players with two hits in the game.
The Golden Bears onslaught started early, capitalizing on a bases-loaded situation in the first inning for two runs.
CSP had another bases-loaded scenario in the second inning, scoring three runs in the inning.
Stych had her first RBI in the second inning, sending Paris Van Dyke in on a single into right field.
CSP scored another pair of runs in the third inning, leaving the score at 7-1 in favor of the Golden Bears.
Stych added another RBI in the fourth inning, allowing Morgan Alar to score on another single to right field.
The Golden Bears score two more runs in the fifth inning, making the score 9-2 going into the bottom of the fifth.
Paris Van Dyke sent in a runner on a fielders choice in the bottom of the fifth, however CSP scored two runs in the sixth inning making the score 11-3.
The Mustangs will be in Mankato, Minn., next week facing Minnesota State in a double-header in the Maverick All Sports Dome on Friday, Feb. 13 beginning at 5 p.m.
