SMSU falls in doubleheader against Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (14-10), fresh off a 2-0 day at THE Spring Games on Monday, dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Florida Southern Mocs (6-13) Tuesday evening. The Mustangs fell in game one 5-0 and game two 1-0.

GAME ONE

Ramsey Hopp (4-7) pitched six innings for the Mustangs allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits, striking out two FSC batters.

SMSU recorded six hits in the first game from six different players, although the Mustangs left five runners on base in the contest.

FSC kicked off the scoring in the third inning with RBIs from Gigi Polanco and Gabby Young and taking a 2-0 lead.

The Mocs kept the offense going in the fifth inning courtesy first of Young's second RBI of the game. After an 11-pitch at bat, FSC's Keira Morris delivered a two-out, two-run base hit, leaving the score at 5-0.

FSC's Des Aitken (3-1) pitched all seven innings for the Mocs, striking out one Mustang batter. Both Polanco and Young led the team in hits with two.

GAME TWO

Jordyn Marsh pitched six innings for SMSU allowing just one run on two hits, striking out four Florida Southern batters.

The Mustang offense struggled to get any momentum early, getting their first hit in the game in the fifth inning, and ending the game with two hits. Kennah Bretschnieder and Aliza Acker provided the offense for SMSU.

Gabby Young scored the lone run in the third inning with an RBI single.

The Mustangs had a chance to tie the game in the seventh after Acker led the inning with a double, however with Morgan Alar pinch running at third base with one out, SMSU could not find a way to bring her home, ending the game at 1-0.

FSC's Natalie Snowden (2-1) pitched all seven innings, not allowing a run on two hits, and struck out one SMSU batter.

SMSU concludes action in THE Spring Games on Wednesday, facing McKendree and American International (Mass.). Game one is slated for 9 a.m. CDT / 10 EDT.
