Mustangs start THE Spring Games with 1-1 record

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (7-5) began THE Spring Games in Clermont, Fla., on Monday afternoon, defeating the Seton Hill (Pa.) Griffins (3-4) 4-0, before dropping the second game to Saint Anselm (N.H.) (3-1) 2-1.
 
GAME ONE (Seton Hill)
 
Jordyn Marsh (6-0) pitched a complete-game shutout for the Mustangs, allowing just four hits and two walks, striking out seven batters.
 
Grace Anderson led the way for SMSU at the plate with two hits including an RBI-double. Riley Kramolisch, Emma Humpal, and Carley Stych also had hits in the game.
 
Humpal kicked off the game with an RBI single to right field in the first inning, allowing Kramolisch to score.
 
Stych doubled the Mustangs' lead in the second, singling to third base, and on a throwing error by the SHU third-baseman, Paris Van Dyke scored from second.
 
In the fifth inning with the bases loaded, Van Dyke was hit by a pitch, allowing Kaylee Hafermann to score.
 
Anderson then sealed the win in the sixth with her previously mentioned RBI-double, sending Stych home to score.
 
Seton Hill's freshman pitcher Josie Frizzell (0-2) pitched six innings, allowing four runs (three unearned), five hits and four walks, striking out eight Mustang batters. Catcher Taylor Schmitt had three hits in the game.
 
GAME TWO (Saint Anselm)
 
Ramsey Hopp (1-4) pitched six innings for SMSU, allowing two runs, three hits and two walks, fanning four Hawks batters.
 
Riley Kramolisch led the Mustangs with three hits in the contest. Hopp, Paris Van Dyke, and Carley Stych also managed hits in the game.
 
Emma Humpal sent Hopp in to score in the first inning on a fielder's choice, the only Mustang run in the game.
 
Saint Anselm second baseman Sarah Cipriani responded in the bottom of the first with a single up the middle, allowing Alexa Salafia and Rose Reitmeyer to score what would be the final runs in the game.
 
Kendra Lee (2-0) pitched all seven innings, allowing one run, six hits, and two walks, only striking out one Mustang batter.
